DR. DİLEK İMAMOĞLU: “IF WE ALL HAVE A VOICE, IT IS THANKS TO THE REPUBLIC”

Istanbul Foundation celebrated the 99th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey with enthusiasm within the scope of its “Grow Your Dreams” project. The celebration held at Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall with the title of “Growing Dreams -Republic and Women”; IMM President Ekrem İmamoğlu, Istanbul Foundation President Perihan Yücel and "Grow Your Dreams" project pioneer Dr. Dilek İmamoğlu was held with the participation of. Making the first speech at the event, Dr. İmamoğlu said, “If we can come together freely here today, if we can decide on the rulers and administrators of our country, if we can provide a modern education to our children, if we all have a say, whether male or female, young or old, it is all thanks to the struggle for independence and the subsequent Republic. We all owe a lot to the Republic and the republican revolutions," he said.

“REPUBLIC IS THE ENLIGHTENMENT AND RENAISSANCE MOVEMENT”

An enlightenment of the Republic and rönesans Underlining the movement, Dr. İmamoğlu said, “Republic is a war against ignorance. It is the transportation of science and science to the farthest corners of Anatolia. It is to equip our children with knowledge that can compete with their contemporaries around the world. Republic is the name of modernity, rationality and a nation reborn from its ashes. It is to create a brand new, young, dynamic and honorable nation that looks to the future with confidence from the sick man of Europe. In the words of our father; 'It's about accomplishing a lot in a short time.' More importantly, the Republic is equality. It is to offer equal opportunities to all children of the nation without exception. It is not to discriminate between men, women, urban, peasant, wealthy and poor. It is to leave behind the outdated understanding that excludes women, oppresses women, and throws the second plan intellectually and socially.”

“I SORRY I HAVE TO STRESS THAT…”

“I regret to emphasize that; We are going through difficult times in the name of equality, freedom and citizen dignity,” said Dr. Imamoglu said:

“When it comes to gender equality, we keep going backwards every day. What we have achieved with the Republic and with the values of the Republic is in danger. Our freedoms, our rights and the achievements we have won through struggle are being taken away from us. On top of interfering with our way of life and thinking, our beliefs, it is desired to be interfered with. Every day, women die from male violence. While all this is going on, a decision can be taken to withdraw even from the Istanbul Convention that we signed to combat violence against women. Once again, I strongly condemn this understanding and everyone who has a will and signature in this decision. We women will not forget them. We will not remain silent on these steps. We will never, ever approve of this will. We will continue to struggle with this mentality on every platform, in every field and at every stage.”

“WE WOMEN, WE WILL NEVER BE DETERMINED”

Reminding that women gained the right to vote and be elected years ago in Turkey, Dr. İmamoğlu said, “We women will never be discouraged. We will never, ever, give up on the gains of the Republic. We will continue to exist in an equal and fair manner in science, art, economy, politics, health, in every field where human beings exist. We know; Societies that do not treat their women fairly cannot have a future. To this end, we will continue to defend justice to the end. I would like to say goodbye to you with a word from our beloved Ata: 'O heroic Turkish woman; you are not worthy to crawl on the ground, but to rise to the sky on your shoulders'” she said.

EKREM İMAMOĞLU: “I AM A STRONG WOMEN'S RIGHTS ADVERTISEMENT”

Speaking after his wife, İBB President İmamoğlu gave examples from women from his childhood, youth, studentship, marriage, business and political life and said, “I am here as a man who listens to them, tries to understand them, and seizes that opportunity. Now, with all the feelings I have accumulated, I am trying to be a manager in Istanbul. Let people read as much as they want. I think whatever's in it makes you feel it. Let him pass in front of the prompter as much as he wants. In fact, a person gives what he has accumulated and cannot pass on to these people. People live it, feel it. I am a really staunch advocate for women's rights," she said. Emphasizing that the Republic has brought a lot to the people of the country, İmamoğlu said, “The Republic has to be innovative at the same time. It is already a system that includes the people and is managed and governed by the people. It is impossible not to have innovation. Development and change is a structure that enriches the system by incorporating some differences within itself.”

“WOMEN WILL NEVER GAVE THE GAINS OF THE REPUBLIC”

Pointing out that they are responsible for preparing the Republic for its second century in the strongest way possible, İmamoğlu said, “We are the generation that always knows the achievements of the Republic and is determined to carry it higher. Today, unfortunately, we know and live that the gains of the Republic are under great attack and under a planned attack. We all know the conditions under which the Republic of Turkey was founded. We are the generations that are determined to overcome all kinds of difficulties, to endure all kinds of attacks and to protect the Republic forever.” Emphasizing that women have a special place and importance in this struggle, İmamoğlu said:

“For women, the Republic of Turkey has provided very special gains. Turkish women achieved their freedom, the right to be an equal individual, and their place and importance in social life with our Republic. In order to understand the position of women in the pre-republican society, we all know the lines that Nazım Hikmet used to describe the women of that time in the Kuvay-i Milliye Epic: '…and he died as if it had never happened / ...and his place on our table came after our ox'. Wisdom. Actually, it is not a very foreign concept to us in life. It is the achievements of the Republic and the vision of the Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk that brought women from this position, as Atatürk said, to the position of 'deserving to rise to the heavens on their shoulders'. I know that women will never give up on the gains of the Republic, just as they will not give up on the Istanbul Convention. From here, I respectfully greet all women around the world fighting for their rights.”
