Organized with the support of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, the “Great İzmir Fire 1922” photography exhibition at İzmir Art Gallery was opened with a ceremony attended by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Mustafa Özuslu. The exhibition includes nearly 60 historical documents in the Ahmet Piriştina City Archive and Museum (APİKAM).

Erased urban memory in this exhibition

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Mustafa Özuslu gave information about the photographs in the exhibition in his speech at the opening ceremony of the exhibition, which was created within the framework of the 100th anniversary of the liberation of İzmir. Stating that the destruction caused by the great fire and the erased memory of the city were reflected in the photographic frames of the period, Özuslu said that İzmir was re-established with great efforts after this disaster. Özuslu said, “As İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, we continue to work with all our strength and determination to make this beautiful city even more beautiful and worthy of the people of İzmir living in it.”

It will remain open until October 2

The fire, which started in Basmane on September 13, 1922, grew with the force of the wind blowing from the land to the sea, and continued until September 18, 1922. The İzmir Fire, which also caused great loss of life, caused significant destruction in the region where Çankaya, Kültürpark, Kahramanlar, Passport and Alsancak are now located. The exhibition, which will remain open until October 2, includes photographs of İzmir taken before, during and after the fire.
