Alstom, the world leader in smart and sustainable mobility, will supply 494 new generation Traxx DC20 electric locomotives named E.3 in Italy to leading national railway operator Polo Mercitalia (Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato). Delivery of these new units is scheduled to begin in early 2024 and will be completed within that year.

These are 2017 additional units under the contract signed by Mercitalia Rail in December 20. Alstom has already delivered 40 Traxx DC3 locomotives, which began commercial operation more than three years ago. The fleet's locomotives will be included in the Full Maintenance program provided by Alstom Italia Service.

“Innovating our fleet of locomotives and wagons is essential to make rail transport more sustainable and efficient,” says Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics. “We plan to purchase 10 wagons and more than 3.500 new generation eco-friendly electric and hybrid locomotives, including 20 of them, over a 300-year period. It directly connects rail transport with other modes of transport, penetrating directly into non-electrified areas such as inland terminals and ports with a rapid change of power.”

“We are extremely proud that our long-standing customer and first investor in the Traxx DC3 high-power electric locomotive, Polo Mercitalia, has decided to implement this purchase option for 40 more units in addition to the 20 units already delivered. ,” says Michele Viale, Managing Director of Alstom Italy and Chairman and CEO of Alstom Ferroviaria. “This additional agreement is further proof of our customers' trust in our Group and in more than 90 sold Traxx DC160 products, about 3 of which circulate on the Italian rail network.”

Traxx DC3 are the latest generation of high-power electric locomotives that maximize efficiency, minimize maintenance interventions and provide higher payload and traction capacity with lower energy consumption. The Traxx DC3 locomotive is part of the Traxx 3 platform, the most modern four-axle locomotive in Europe. The last 20 years in Europe witnessed the sale of more than 20 Traxx locomotives with homologation in 2400 countries, with a total distance of more than 300 million km per year.

All Traxx DC3 locomotives designed for the Italian market will be produced at Alstom's Vado Ligure facility. With more than a hundred years of experience in the design and construction of locomotives, including the latest generation of Traxx electric locomotives, the facility is the manufacturing and maintenance hub for rolling stock and subsystems. A historic site where over 400 employees are currently manufacturing the latest generation of Traxx electric locomotives as well as major revisions of traction units.
