Paddy Production in Turkey Reached 1 Million Tons

Paddy production, which is called “groatless rice” in Turkey, has reached 1 million tons. Paddy produced in 28 provinces in our country is mostly produced in the Marmara Region, which accounts for 70,2 percent of the production. The production of rice, which is one of the most preferred products on the tables, is increasing.

After 2000, the use of high-yielding varieties, especially the Osmancık-97 variety, the improvement of cultivation techniques, the use of modern agricultural tools and equipment such as laser-controlled leveling equipment in production, as well as the mechanization from planting to harvest play an important role in this increase.

While paddy cultivation was carried out on an area of 2002 thousand hectares in 60 in Turkey, this area increased to 2021 thousand 129 hectares in 490.

Likewise, paddy production, which was 2002 thousand tons in 360, increased to 2021 million tons (1 thousand tons for rice) in 600. Average annual rice consumption per person is around 10 kilograms.

The highest paddy production in our country is in the Marmara Region with a rate of 2021% as of 70,2.

This region is followed by the Black Sea with 19,4 percent and the Central Anatolian Regions with 8,6 percent. The production of other regions is at the level of 1,8 percent.

Edirne ranks first in paddy production in 28 provinces. 41,2 percent of the total production is realized in this province.

This province is followed by Samsun (15,3%) and Balıkesir (13,7%).

Çanakkale (9,8%), Çorum (5,9%), Sinop (2,8 percent), Çankırı (2,2 percent), Bursa (1,9 percent), Kırklareli (1,7 percent), and Tekirdağ ( 1,6 percent is also among the provinces where production is made.

EFFICIENCY INCREASE STUDIES

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry focuses on efforts to increase yields in paddy.

The breeding of Osmancık-97 rice variety was started in 1982 at the Thrace Agricultural Research Institute affiliated to TAGEM and registered in 1997.

The average paddy yield, which was 97 kg per decare before the development of Osmancık-500 variety, increased to over 97 kg after Osmancık-800 took part in production. According to 2011 FAO data, Turkey ranked first in paddy yield with 905 kg/da.

Within the framework of the "Development of Varieties Tolerant to Rice Blight Disease" project carried out with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) since 2011, 2020 rice varieties, namely Aslı, Zeybek, Bereket, Hasat, Aliço, Yanmaz, TARI7, resistant to rice blight disease have been developed and developed. has been registered.

In addition, genes that increase rice yield were transferred to these cultivars that are tolerant to rice blight disease.

These genes increased the plant's stem strength, cluster length and the number of grains per cluster, thereby increasing the rice yield.

In 2020, 9 tons of certified paddy seeds were produced throughout Turkey. 975% of rice seeds consisted of varieties belonging to Thrace Agricultural Research Institute within the body of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM).

The paddy products produced are used extensively in the industry.

There are 111 active paddy factories throughout Turkey.

The largest paddy rice mill is operating in Edirne. Edirne with 39 factories is followed by Balıkesir with 22 factories, Samsun with 16 factories and Mersin with 12 factories.

PENALTY FOR UNAUTHORIZED RICE PLANTING

A license from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is required for paddy cultivation. According to the Paddy Sowing Law No. 3039, the cultivation of this product is subject to permission; A license is issued to the producers who want to cultivate paddy, based on the title deed of the land to be cultivated, the lease agreement (approved by the village headman) and/or the discovery report prepared by the Commission (based on the person's statement).

If paddy cultivation is allowed, a fee is charged to the producers under the name of "licensing fee". Although the license fee for 2021 varies according to decare and regions, it was applied as 5-5,5 TL.

Farmers who plant rice without permission or who do not allow paddy cultivation on their land are charged a fee under the "illegal cultivation fee". This fee was generally applied as 2021 TL per decare for 167.

INTEREST IN BLACK RICE

Meanwhile, consumers' interest in black rice is increasing. In Turkey, black rice is produced on 120 decares of land, 60 decares in Edirne and 180 decares in Samsun.

There are 2 registered black rice varieties in our country. Black 1, the first black rice variety of our country, was registered in 2015 by the Trakya Agricultural Research Institute. This variety has certified seed production.

The Ermes variety was registered under the name of Harman Tarım Tohumculuk in 2016, but certified seed production was not realized.

Black rice, which has a genetically unique aroma and smell, contains higher antioxidants, B vitamins and digestible cellulose compared to white rice. It also has a higher content of zinc, iron, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium than white rice.

GEOGRAPHICAL RICE

Geographical indications, which play an important role in creating privileges in local products and increasing the contribution of these products to the rural economy, also increase the value of rice.

Geographical indication registration for Karacadağ rice, İpsala rice, Tosya rice, Bolu Kıbrıscık rice and Konuralp rice was obtained from the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. In addition, EU geographical indication application was made for İpsala rice. There are geographical indication registration applications for Terme rice, Gönen rice, Biga pearl rice and Yusufeli rice.

SUPPORT GIVEN TO PADDLE

Within the scope of the "Communiqué on Support Payment for Crop Production", in 2021, paddy difference payment support was 10 kr/kg, domestic certified seed use support was 16 TL/da, diesel support was 68 TL/da, and fertilizer support was 8 TL/da.

The amount of support for paddy produced within the scope of organic agriculture is 40 TL/da for individual product certificate and 20 TL/da for producer group production certificate; Good agricultural practices support was determined as 10 TL/da in paddy production, regardless of individual or group certification.

Domestic certified seed production support was determined as 0,25 TL kg/da for certified grade and 0,35 TL kg/da for original basic/upper grade.

Certified seed use support for 2022 is applied as 24 TL/da for paddy.
