First in Turkey... Train to Carry Domestic Waste in Manisa Starts Trial Expedition

Realizing a first in Turkey, Manisa Metropolitan Municipality started to transport domestic solid wastes from the districts by train in order to be disposed of at Uzunburun Solid Waste Disposal and Landfill Facility. Adem Gökçe, Head of Environmental Protection and Control Department of Manisa Metropolitan Municipality, stated that they have started trial voyages with the train moving to the garbage transfer station in Alaşehir from Muradiye Domestic Waste Transport Operation by Train, and pointed out that with the implementation of the environmentalist investment, approximately 10 Million Liras will be saved annually. .

Manisa Metropolitan Municipality, which put an end to the 40-year-old garbage problem of Manisa with the Uzunburun Solid Waste Disposal and Landfill Facility, implemented the project of transporting domestic solid waste by train. Realizing a first in Turkey with this project, Manisa Metropolitan Municipality started trial runs with the train moving to the garbage transfer station in Alaşehir from the Muradiye Domestic Waste Transport Operation. Sharing his feelings after the train departed, Adem Gökçe, Head of Environmental Protection and Control Department of Manisa Metropolitan Municipality, expressed that they are happy to break new ground in Turkey under the leadership of Manisa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cengiz Ergün. Providing information about the achievements of the project, Gökçe said, “We were transporting domestic solid waste from the district to the Uzunburun Solid Waste Disposal facility with trucks. Due to our geographical structure, the distance between the districts is quite high. For this reason, we started to work on the realization of our project of transporting solid waste by train. As of today, we have started to transport domestic solid wastes by train. With this project, which we have implemented, it reduces the wear of vehicles, fuel costs, depreciation and maintenance costs, as well as reducing carbon emissions, thus making it an environmentally friendly mode of transportation.”
