İBB to Organize a Contest for Küçükçekmece Lake Basin

İBB President, who participated in the 'Look at the Future of Istanbul from Küçükçekmece Lagoon' event Ekrem İmamoğluannounced that they will organize an idea competition that will give the region an identity. Reminding that Küçükçekmece Lake was used as a drinking water source until the 80s, İmamoğlu said; “These images, which were formed from new settlements such as Başakşehir, Bahçeşehir and Esenyurt towards the basin of this lake, which we cannot describe in the name of urbanism and planning, brought this basin to a very unpleasant process today. Now, both Istanbul and this basin are facing another threat. He is also faced with a project called Kanal Istanbul, with a freak logic. But we hope that we will eliminate it anyway, and we will be in an effort to bring an urban understanding that protects this nature and develops the future with the existing assets and beauties of Istanbul. We will describe a process with the vision of a new Küçükçekmece Lake with its basin, surroundings, delta, background, ancient city and other points that will be formed from here, and with the saving of the future.”

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) President Ekrem İmamoğlu, together with Küçükçekmece Mayor Kemal Çebi and Avcılar Mayor Turan Hançerli participated in the “Look at the Future of Istanbul from Küçükçekmece Lagoon” event. Visiting the stands set up for activities that will last all day, İmamoğlu was informed by Çağatay Seçkin, Head of IMM Park, Garden and Green Areas Department. İmamoğlu, who also experienced bird watching with binoculars from the pier on Küçükçekmece Lake, made his explanations on the subject from the same point. Stating that Küçükçekmece Lake and its basin have been a point of interest for years, İmamoğlu said, “Because when we take the camera right on my back and look at it, the place where that rising structure you see on the ridge is, is where my school is. Since 89, I have been watching and observing this place," he said.

“WE WAS A SOURCE OF DRINKING WATER UNTIL THE 80'S”

Stating that they are in cooperation with the municipalities of Küçükçekmece and Avcılar in the region, İmamoğlu said, “The Küçükçekmece Lake, which was used as a source of drinking water until the 80s, is now unfortunately buried in uncertainty. Of course, while we examine and detail this place, on the one hand, we are carrying out a project work process on the point of what kind of an identity and future can we provide here, this region, this basin," said our friends. Noting that the region has beauties reminiscent of Venetian canals, İmamoğlu said, “Historical areas are very strong here. Our Turan President also shows a very special interest in the Ancient City of Bathonea. They have a high degree of joint work both in examining the ancient site and in the formation of excavations. We also try to be supportive. On the one hand, we have caves here. These are the caves that have witnessed a history of nearly 10 thousand years. Caves describing the first settlement areas. This basin, this region is envisaged as one of the points where the first agriculture was made in Thrace”.

“WE WILL DISPOSE THE CHANNEL ISTANBUL THREAT”

Reminding that in the past, unplanned and unpredictable projects were carried out in Küçükçekmece Lake and its basin, İmamoğlu said:

“When we look from Küçükçekmece towards Başakşehir, on the one hand, we see the building scene, on the one hand, Ispartakule and the constructions in that region, which are formed towards the west of Altınşehir, which we define as Bahçeşehir; On the one hand, these images, which are formed from the ridges of Esenyurt towards the basin of this lake, and which we cannot describe in the name of urbanism and planning, actually brought this basin to a very unpleasant process today. Now, both Istanbul and this basin are facing another threat. He, too, is faced with a project called Kanal Istanbul, with a freak logic. But we hope that we will eliminate it anyway, and we will be in an effort to bring an urban understanding that protects this nature and develops the future with the existing assets and beauties of Istanbul. We will describe a process with the vision of a new Küçükçekmece Lake with its basin, surroundings, delta, background, ancient city and other points to be formed from here, and saving the future.”

“WITHOUT NATURAL AREAS…”

Sharing the knowledge that 160 bird species have been detected in the Küçükçekmece Lake basin, İmamoğlu said, “As Küçükçekmece Municipality, they published the book for this place. Without these natural areas, if we can no longer see living species, in fact, every bird that is missing, every plant that is missing, every living thing that is missing means maybe tens of thousands of years that we have lost from the world. In this respect, we will continue to carry out these works responsibly, in order to create a period that does not diminish the life of this beautiful world, this beautiful living space, which is entrusted to us, but does not harm it. We want people to live and see these beauties. Unfortunately, an unplanned process has been experienced. But from now on, we will prepare an Istanbul that acts with reason, science, logic and urban planning principles for the future by working together with the concept and document of 'Vision 2050' in the first place. I would like to thank both the Mayor of Avcılar and the Mayor of Küçükçekmece for their cooperation. I wish our teams a good work under the leadership of Mr. Çağatay. Frankly, we look forward to the results," he said.
