A First At-Grade Channel Interchange in Turkey

The at-grade canalized intersection work, which is the first in Turkey and carried out by the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Road Construction Maintenance and Repair Department teams, on the 3rd Ring Road was completed in a short period of 5 days and opened to traffic.

3 thousand 500 tons of hot asphalt was laid

As part of the renovation and arrangement works carried out on the road of 6 thousand 75 meters in total, the area at the intersection of 36th Street and 13th Street was closed to traffic for a week. The teams, which implemented a similar road to the 1th ring road on the 4rd ring road, completed the at-grade canalized intersection at the intersection of 3th Street and Ali Kaya Mutlu Street (36th Street) on the road route. Thanks to the intersection that steers from 13 different lanes when vehicles turn right and left in a straight direction, waiting time at traffic lights is minimized.

The teams, which laid a total of 1.900 tons of hot asphalt, including 1.600 tons of binder and 3 tons of wear layer, produced 500 thousand meters of curbs and 5 thousand square meters of pavement. Finally, the intersection, whose road lines were completed, was put into service of the citizens.

“A project that has not been tried before in Turkey”

Bertan Ünal, one of the engineers of the Road Construction Maintenance and Repair Department, and the 3rd Ring Road Construction Site Chief, said, “The works at this intersection are carried out within the scope of the 3rd Ring Road arrangement projects. We are currently in the intersection arrangement project at the intersection of 13th Street, that is, 3rd Ring Road and 36th Street. We started the project 5 days ago and as of today, we have completed it and opened it to the service of our citizens. It is a project that has not been tried in Turkey before. Canalized junction modules in Turkey are designed as underpasses or overpasses. As At-Zemin, we are trying this project for the first time in Mersin.”

“6 more intersections were designed as canalized”

Explaining the characteristics of the canalized intersection, Ünal said, “When we say a canalized intersection, the first thing that comes to our mind is the evaluation of the roads in 3 different lanes. This junction module was created by routing traffic in three different lanes. It is an intersection model that aims to enable vehicles to travel more comfortably with less waiting times at the lights, both in right turns, left turns and in straight directions. 3 intersections on the 6rd Ring Road were designed in this way and their construction phases will be completed in the coming period.
