Turkish Engineers Win a Prestigious Competition in the Russian Nuclear Industry

AKKUYU NUCLEAR INC. employees became the winners of the "Person of the Year 2021" competition held in the field of nuclear industry of the Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation Rosatom. The competition is held annually among about 300 thousand employees from nuclear enterprises in the Russian nuclear industry.

Making suggestions for the improvement and optimization of the water chemistry laboratory project, Çiğdem Yılmaz, the chemical analysis specialist of the primary circuit of the chemistry workshop of AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş., suggested using a high-resolution atomic absorption spectrometer instead of a mass spectrometer for the analysis of boron-10 isotope, by the Rosatom General Directorate " Rising Star" special award. The laboratory's research on the basis of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGS) is important in terms of developing the scientific and technical potential of the Turkish nuclear industry and establishing a reference for other NPP construction projects in Turkey.

Çiğdem Yılmaz, the chemical analysis specialist of the primary circuit of the chemistry workshop of AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. This award gives me inspiration for new achievements that can be realized in the Akkuyu NPP project. Most of my colleagues at the power plant are interested in in-depth study of nuclear technologies and we try to contribute to the development of technologies. This award is a fruit of the 'knowledge transfer' process in the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant project. Turkish citizens participating in the training program for the project receive a prestigious education in 'nuclear energy engineering' at leading Russian universities and then reinforce their theoretical knowledge during internships at existing nuclear power plants. We know how a nuclear power plant is built from the inside, how it is inspected, and with which systems and components it works. Today, we are already playing a direct role in determining a roadmap for a promising and high-tech industry and establishing the nuclear energy license base in our country. This is how technology transfer is achieved, and this is how our country's nuclear energy dream comes true. I am happy to be a part of this.”

As part of the Russian-Turkish joint training program to train personnel to work at Akkuyu NPP, many young Turkish engineers successfully completed their training and started working on the project. Young engineers put their knowledge into practice. General Manager of Rosatom received the "Reliable Support" special award from AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. Human Resources Director Andrei Pavliuk was awarded. As nuclear experts, Pavliuk launched a staff flow system and established an industry-wide international HR team to recruit operational and construction staff for the Akkuyu NPP under construction in the Republic of Turkey. The system enables to increase the employment rate, shorten the recruitment process and implement the 2021 recruitment plan. Thanks to this system, local people who want to participate in the project can be employed. Akkuyu NPP Employment Center was established in Gülnar in March last year. During the year the center was operational, hundreds of experts joined the team at the first nuclear power plant. Among the most applied positions are traffic controller, slinging, mold making, welding, assembling, security guard. To quickly fill vacancies, the center representatives created a pool of candidates. The center is constantly renewing the pool. Silifke Mayor Sadık Altunok stated that with the start of the construction of the nuclear power plant in the region, there was almost no unemployment and many agricultural cooperatives had a great seasonal worker shortage.

AKKUYU NUCLEAR INC. Human Resources (HR) Director Andrei Pavliuk said: “The highly professional team of our HR department has created an effective recruitment system. The creation of such a system makes it possible to use it in other NPP construction projects abroad in terms of planning, preparation, selection and registration as well as organizing the recruitment of qualified NPP operating personnel.”

This is not the first victory of young Turkish nuclear scientists in the "Person of the Year" competition. Suggesting technical solutions for the improvement of the systems of the turbine section of Akkuyu NPP in 2019, AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. Turbine Department Specialist Mehmet Kaynar was awarded a special diploma in the "Rising Star" category, General Manager of Rosatom.

Modernizing the quality management system of AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. and applying digital technologies based on best industry practices, AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. Quality Director Maxim Rabotaev, on the other hand, received the first prize in the corporate-wide "Supply, Logistics and Quality Management" category in the "Person of the Year 2021" competition.

AKKUYU NUCLEAR INC. Quality Director Maxim Rabotaev, in his statement on receiving the award, said: “Akkuyu NPP is a large-scale and long-term project. Thanks to its strong and professional management, the management team is looking for innovative ways to solve many problems. All of these methods are supported by Rosatom management and pave the way for new opportunities and bright ideas. We are very grateful to our management, which supports our initiatives, creates professional development, all conditions for strengthening the project, and encourages professional specialization. It is very pleasing that the solution we have implemented by the project team has been answered and put into practice.”

AKKUYU NUCLEAR INC. General Manager Anastasia Zoteeva congratulated her colleagues on the success of nuclear workers in the prestigious competition, emphasizing: “Nuclear energy is a special industry. It requires perfection in everything. Quality is important to all of us, because it's about safety! I am proud to convey Russian nuclear technologies to our esteemed Turkish colleagues. They don't just adopt it, they develop technologies and offer new solutions. I also express my gratitude and appreciation to all Turkish builders who are building their country's nuclear future with their own hands. I would like to emphasize once again that we are doing everything we can to protect all the rights of the companies involved in the project in the field. Hundreds of Turkish companies are already involved in the project and their number will increase even more. Together, we are moving towards our localization goals.”

Akkuyu NPP construction project is in its most active phase. The construction of the four power units of the power plant continues on a full scale. Turkish subcontractors are also on the field. Due to the change of the main contractor for the NPP construction, almost all the subcontractors working in the power plant area decided to continue working on the project with a new main contractor, TSM Enerji İnşaat Sanayi Limited Şirketi. Most of the contracts have been signed, the remaining contracts are in the signing phase. Active recruitment is taking place for both construction expertise and operating personnel positions of Akkuyu NPP.
