Private Egepol Hospital Interventional Radiology Specialist Dr. Mehmet Emrah Güven said that it is possible to treat varicocele, which is one of the most common causes of male infertility, without surgery.

exp. Dr. Güven stated that Varicocele, which is seen due to the enlargement of the veins of the testicles, adversely affects the quality and number of sperm, especially in young men.

Stating that the disease manifests itself with the complaint of pain, Dr. Mehmet Emrah Güven said, “The most important method in diagnosing varicocele is Doppler ultrasonography. Doppler USG clinical examination is decisive in treatment. Varicocele usually occurs on the left side due to the position of the left testicular vein. Although varicocele is additional sided, it can impair sperm production. If there is deterioration in sperm count and motility when the diagnosis of varicocele is made, if the pain in the testis affects daily life, treatment should be applied.

PATIENT CAN BE DISCHARGED SAME DAY

Noting that varicocele is not a disease that can be treated with drugs, Dr. Mehmet Emrah Güven stated that with embolization, which is an interventional method, the patient regained his health without surgery.

Emphasizing that this method offers some advantages over conventional surgery, Dr. Güven continued: “The treatment alternatives are open surgery, laparoscopic surgery and embolization. Urologists often apply surgical treatment. Embolization is a method whose frequency of application has increased in recent years and successful results have been obtained. We also apply the embolization procedure in our clinic. The procedure is a day-long procedure performed by interventional radiologists, it is not necessary to stay in the hospital overnight. In the angiography unit, it is performed with local anesthesia and ultrasound guidance from the inguinal vein. In the process, the vein to be embolized is reached with special catheters and is done by using special occlusive materials for embolization. The process takes an average of 45 minutes. It takes 1 hour. After two hours of follow-up, the patient can return to his normal life on the same day. In the procedure performed from the inguinal vein, no traces are left. The procedure is done with local numbing. It does not require general anesthesia. Technically, it is a very effective treatment method as the circulation is eliminated by embolization in both the enlarged sick vein and the vein that causes it. Since no incision is made on the patient's skin, there is no risk of wound pain and infection. The success rate is similar when compared to the surgical method. Less risk of recurrence”
