Environmentalists Launched Vigil for Asbestos Ship in Aliağa, İzmir

Environmentalists in İzmir launched a vigil against the asbestos warship Sao Paulo, which was on its way to Aliağa to be dismantled. Members of the Aliağa Environment Platform (ALÇEP) gathered at the Democracy Square in Aliağa, “We will not let this ship into our country's territorial waters and we will not allow it to be dismantled. The people, not the capital, will win; Our struggle for the environment, our struggle for life will win. We derive our justification from our legitimate struggle. We will not bow to the profit ambition of a handful of capitalists.”

Aliağa Environmental Platform (ALÇEP) started a vigil against the São Paulo ship, which contains toxic waste, to be brought to İzmir for dismantling. Announced with a press release in Aliağa Democracy Square, the vigil will start every day at 18.30.

ALÇEP reading the press release Sözcüsü Zeki Küçükakyüz reminded that the ship departed from Brazil on 4 August and said, “One day after its departure, the Brazilian courts banned the ship from leaving the port. This news caused a false perception in the public that the ship would not come. However, the ship is heading towards İzmir, ignoring the court decision, accompanied by SÖK Denizcilik.”

Asking where does the company get the power to refuse to recognize the court decision and to ignore international conventions, Küçükakyüz said that they do not understand why the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change still allows this ship to continue on its way despite national and international warnings.

“OUR FIGHT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND LIFE WILL WIN”

Küçükakyüz said, “We stubbornly will not let this ship into our country's territorial waters and will not allow it to be dismantled. The people, not the capital, will win, our struggle for the environment, our struggle for life will win. We will not bow to the profit ambition of a handful of capitalists. We call on our fellow workers, do not dismantle this ship. Your life is more valuable than the money your shipbreaking bosses will earn. We're launching our vigil to stop the poisoned ship. We invite all NGOs, unions, provincial and district municipalities, non-governmental organizations and parties, and our people to support us. We are on watch to say that Aliağa is not the garbage dump of the world.”
