With the “Flamingo Road” project carried out by IzDoğa, one of the companies of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, the people of Izmir have the opportunity to examine the bird species in the Gediz Delta both by sea and by land. The “Flamingo Road” project carried out by İzDoğa, one of the companies of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, continues. Visiting the Gediz Delta, a candidate for the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List, both by sea and by land, the people of Izmir have the opportunity to explore the bird species in the area with the most colorful boat and bus tours of the Gulf.
Göker Yarkın Yaraşlı, who guides the Flamingo Trail tours, said, “We have a one and a half hour trip with our boat from Mavişehir fishing port four times a day, except Monday. We can see thousands of flamingos and hundreds of shore and water birds accompanying them by entering the coastal marshes in the Gediz Delta. Our boat is small, it was designed not to disturb them. The engine also runs very quietly. We can observe the natural life here without causing any harm. Our bus tour with a quota of 35 people also starts from Sasalı Wildlife Park. We are going to the farthest point of the South Gediz Delta, the land. In addition to flamingos, we can see land species and mammals. “People are fascinated by the beauty they see.”
“An area that offers life to İzmir”
Emphasizing the importance of the Gediz Delta, Göker Yarkın Yaraşlı continued his words as follows: “The Gediz Delta is a very important wetland for the world. 300 different bird species were observed. This is the only area in the world where the three endangered Crested Pelican, Mediterranean Seal and Caretta Caretta turtles live together. We are talking about an area of 40 thousand hectares. It offers life in a very wide area. We can say that İzmir is an area that offers life.”
From flamingo to cormorants
With the project, it is aimed to draw attention to dozens of bird species that are the hosts of İzmir Bay, especially flamingos. Thanks to the tours, visitors have the opportunity to learn and observe many birds, from flamingos to cormorants, from gulls to pelicans.
