Buca Metro Construction Works Continue As Planned

The biggest investment in İzmir's history, the tunnel excavation that will provide the Üçyol - Şirinyer connection in the Buca Metro begins at the General Asım Gündüz Station. Before the construction works, the trees in the area where the station will be located, Muammer Yaşar Bostancı Park and Waterfall Park will be moved and protected. When the construction is completed, the trees will be planted in their old places.

The rail system attack in İzmir continues unabated. Construction works on the Buca Metro line, the biggest investment in İzmir's history, are gaining momentum after the first resource of approximately 21 and a half million euros was provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the French Development Agency (AFD). In the first stage, arrangements are being made in the area for the construction of the station to be located in Karabağlar General Asım Gündüz Mahallesi and the start of tunnel excavations.

Ergenekon: We are saving all trees

The trees in Muammer Yaşar Bostancı Park and Waterfall Park will be transported using special techniques and equipment so that the tunnel excavations can begin and the General Asım Gündüz Station can be built. The trees will be protected by taking care of them in the nurseries of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality.

Mehmet Oğuz Ergenekon, Head of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Rail System Department, stated that they worked in the area for three to four months and examined the trees one by one. We will transfer our existing trees to our nursery with special machines. When our station is finished, in one and a half or two years, there will be more trees in this area. In addition to the trees we move and maintain, we will also plant new trees. We would like to have vacant lands and create construction sites. But it is very difficult, almost impossible to find such areas in İzmir. Our goal is always to deliver the land that we have already purchased in a way that is greener than before and more suitable for the use of the citizens, in line with the environmentalist vision of our president. We are working towards this goal," he said.

Buca Metro stations

Tunneling machines came to Izmir

Emphasizing that they started the Buca Metro, Ergenekon said, “Our excavations will continue from this station area towards Buca. Currently, our three tunnel boring machines have reached İzmir. They are being taken care of. Our machines will start digging. Excavations will also begin in Buca. We aim to make the people of Buca use the metro in about four, four and a half years. It is one of the biggest investments İzmir has ever made. Our President constantly followed and directed. As our president said, 'That metro will come to Buca' and it is starting to come.”

Thanks to President Soyer

Nuran Dursun, headman of Konak Zafertepe District, said, “We are happy that the transfer station of the metro starts from our neighborhood. There will be no problems with our trees. The trees will be brought back to our park after the subway work is finished. Buca Metro will add value to our neighborhood and solve our transportation problem. Tunç Soyer I would like to thank my president for bringing such an important investment to our district.”

Buca's traffic problem is solved

The construction work of the tunnels and stations of the Buca Metro will be completed with a contract value of 3 billion 921 million 498 thousand TL and will cost 765 million Euros with the trains that will run on the line.

When Buca Metro is put into service, transportation between Buca and Üçyol will become easier. University students' access to Dokuz Eylul University Tınaztepe Campus will be relieved. Buca Metro will also breathe life into Izmir traffic.

It will provide driverless service.

The line, which forms the 5th stage of the İzmir Light Rail System, will serve between Üçyol Station - Dokuz Eylül University Tınaztepe Campus - Çamlıkule. The length of the line, which will be passed through a deep tunnel using the TBM machine, will be 13,5 kilometers and will consist of 11 stations. Starting with Üçyol, the line will include Zafertepe, Bozyaka, General Asım Gündüz, Şirinyer, Buca Municipality, Kasaplar, Hasanağa Bahçesi, Dokuz Eylül University, Buca Koop and Çamlıkule stations respectively. The Buca line will be integrated with the existing metro line running between Fahrettin Altay and Evka-3 at Üçyol Station, and with the İZBAN line at Şirinyer Station. Train sets on this line will serve without drivers. Within the scope of the project, a maintenance workshop and warehouse building will be built in an indoor area of 80 square meters.

How did the Buca Metro process work?

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality signed an external financing agreement of 250 million Euros with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the French Development Agency (AFD) for the Üçyol - Buca Metro line. An authorization agreement was signed with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) for 125 million Euros and with the Black Sea Trade and Development Bank (BSTDB) for 115 million Euros. Thus, an international investment of 490 million Euros was brought to the city. The contract for the Üçyol - Buca Line construction work, which will be built by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality with the resources it has found, was signed on January 4, 2022. After the site handover on January 21, 2022, the groundbreaking ceremony was held on February 14, 2022 with the participation of the President of the Republican People's Party, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, and the work started.
