The university selection period ends on August 5th. University candidates continue to determine their preference lists. Candidates who are undecided about their preferences leave their preferences to the last day. Istinye University (ISU) Institutional Psychologist Saime Serpil Özgül warns the candidates not to write the sections they do not want. Özgül, who also makes suggestions on what to consider when choosing, says, "The most important thing to consider is the preferences made on the department you want, not according to the score."

There may be psychological problems when you choose the department you do not want.

Istinye University (ISU) Institutional Psychologist Saime Serpil Özgül, who warns the candidates not to write the department they do not want, says:

“When you hide the state you are, your emotional states of the self (self, essence) become complicated. This confusion leads to not knowing what to do with your life. The next step will cause you to feel anger, aggression and guilt about the past. The feeling of not being able to recognize yourself when you can't connect with yourself causes you to feel as if everyone around you will make an insecure act at any moment and to perceive the world as a dangerous place. If you go on the path of self with environmental factors instead of getting in touch with your real self and your real preferences and needs, feelings of regret may emerge after a certain time in your life. Think of it this way, your head is buried in the sand and you prefer to continue your life that way instead of getting out of that buried state. The emotions you feel here allow you to get out of there. Self-actualization occurs step by step, as Maslow states in his hierarchy of needs. This is possible through the journey of self-knowledge and companionship; When the unwanted section is chosen, psychological problems such as mood problems, inability to exist and depression may be in question.”

Our profession becomes like the clothes we wear on ourselves.

Özgül also gives information about the things to be considered while making a choice and says:

“Students should make their choices based on the department they want to see themselves. Being active in the university, joining clubs and having competence are the factors that make the university a university. Along with the department to be chosen, the university to be studied should also be determined well. Therefore, the most important consideration is the preferences made on the desired department, not according to the score. After a certain period, our profession becomes like the clothes we wear. It is so central to our daily lives.”

In order not to regret, it is necessary to approach with a solution-oriented approach

Özgül also gives advice to the candidates who could not achieve a target score in the exam and who could not rank the desired department. “The center of your life is the person himself, and as Tolstoy said, only the main word of the person is mentioned. For this reason, I suggest that by focusing on the present, not the past, if our students think that they cannot show the required performance, they can prepare for another year and approach them with a solution-oriented approach instead of feeling regret and negativity.”
