ÖDEMİŞ: “ANKARA CASTLE IS AN OPEN AIR MUSEUM OF ANKARA”

Bekir Ödemiş, Head of the Department of Cultural and Natural Heritage, who attended the opening of the exhibition, pointed out that they are carrying out intensive work for the restoration of all the historical, cultural and archaeological heritage of ancient civilizations that lived in Ankara.

“Ankara Castle is one of the most important values of Ankara. Although the exact date of construction of our castle is not known, we can define it as a structure that is at least 2 thousand 250 years old. The castle underwent repairs as it wore down over time, and during the repairs, the most suitable materials that could be found in the conditions of the day were evaluated. The materials used in the repair of the castle body appear in the exhibition as archaeological and cultural assets left by the civilizations that lived in Ankara. For this, Ankara Castle is an open-air museum of Ankara. When we look at the castle layers, it is possible to see the traces of all civilizations that have lived in Ankara. Our Honorable President Mansur Yavaş said, "Let's start with the understanding that Ankara can be protected if it is known by the people of Ankara." In this context, we are rapidly carrying out studies aimed at preserving the architectural heritage of cultural and archaeological assets in Ankara. On the other hand, we contribute to such cultural activities in order to raise awareness of these assets.”

THE EXHIBITION CAN BE VISITED UNTIL AUGUST 12

Describing the stones placed in Ankara Castle by various civilizations during the restoration of the castle to be preserved in a state embedded in the walls, it is a great chance for the stones with writings and various figures not to be lost. Cabir Deniz Seyran said, “Everything started when I noticed the stone at the entrance of the castle. In the same way, he continued with the stones next to the fountain in the square. As a result, as I saw that such stones were buried in the inner and outer castle walls as an ocean, I thought that I should make a project about it. For more than 2 years, I went to Ankara Castle and photographed these stones. Many stones belonging to the Romans, Byzantines, Anatolian Seljuks and Ottoman Periods were used in the repair of the castle. Every civilization that comes here has placed stones inside the walls as if to say 'we are here too'.

The exhibition “Solved Stones in the Body of Ankara Castle”, consisting of 60 photographs, can be visited at the Kızılay Metro Art Gallery until Friday, August 12.
