Konya, which is preparing to host the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games, became the 2022 Capital of Islamic Countries within the scope of the Cooperation Protocol for the Sports Capital of Islamic Countries. The President of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation, Prince Abdulaziz Bin Türki Al Faysal Al Saud, Youth and Sports Minister Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoğlu, Konya Governor Vahdettin Özkan and Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay jointly signed the protocol certifying that Konya is the 2022 Capital of Islamic Countries.
Konya, which will host the 56th Islamic Solidarity Games to be held between 4.200-9 August with the participation of 18 athletes from 5 countries, is preparing to make the official opening of the organization on Tuesday, August 9 with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and heads of state from various Islamic countries.
Before the Games, with the participation of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (İSSF) President Prince Abdulaziz Bin Türki Al Faysal Al Saud, Youth and Sports Minister Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoğlu, Konya Governor Vahdettin Özkan and Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay, Konya 2022 Islamic Countries Sports Capital Cooperation Protocol signed.
“2022 and 2023 WILL BE A YEAR FULL OF SPORTS ON BEHALF OF KONYA”
Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality Uğur İbrahim Altay stated that they are excited to host the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games and that they are very happy to receive the results of their sports investments. President Altay said, “I hope 2022 and 2023 will take its place in history as a year full of sports for our Konya. May the 2022 Islamic Countries Sports Capital of Konya be beneficial for our city and our country. I would like to express my endless gratitude to our President, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who has always been with us with their support, and to Mr. Muharrem Kasapoğlu, our Minister of Youth and Sports.” said.
Konya was declared as the “2023 World Capital of Sports” by the European Federation of Sports Capitals and Cities (ACES Europe) in the past months.
