In combat, RuneScape is designed to be playable with two combat mechanics. These two methods of struggle are known as "Old" or "Regular" (more commonly referred to as "EOC" which stands for "Evolution of War"). The legacy mod offers a more traditional and more familiar version of the RuneScape game. The new "Evolution of War" mod gives a new feel to RuneScape's standard of combat and has been compared to other games like Blizzard's MMORPG World of Warcraft, among others.

Legacy mod is your standard RuneScape war machine. It's essentially a matter of hitting, which also means allowing a varied RNG on what kind of damage to do. For many veterans of the game, Legacy mode is the only "true way" to play RuneScape, as the base game was originally designed around this main form of combat.

The “Regular” (EoC) fighting style gives players abilities that they can use depending on the various weapons, items, and armor they have at their disposal. Other factors at play in EoC can be seen as the style a player is fighting (Melee, Range or Magic), the level they have achieved in a particular Skill, the quests the player has completed, and more.

EoC has become addicted to "Adrenaline", which can be defined as a bar of usable energy that will re-emerge more often using a player's various abilities. However, certain abilities are only available when the Adrenaline meter is at a certain point and will hold the meter a significant amount once selected. To re-use the same ability or similar, the player will need to refill their Adrenaline meter and sometimes wait for a cooldown (which is also extremely easy).

Some special items are called "Special Attacks". These abilities are item specific and can be used in both combat styles. One of these items and attacks is the Saradomin Godsword and its "Healing Blade" ability. When the skill is used with the sword, the Saradomin Godsword will deal significantly more damage while healing the player's health points and prayer points. Players often use these perks to further their progress in the game or to ensure their survival while fighting other players or creatures.

RuneScape is a point-and-click based MMORPG set in the fantasy world of Gielinor. Players can interact with NPCs (Non-Player Characters, game-controlled characters), objects, and many areas of the game. It is not entirely necessary for the player to decide what to do, and everything is optional. It decides whether the player would prefer to train a Skill, fight monsters, join a quest, play a mini-game, or socialize with others. Each player decides their own destiny and can choose to do as they please.

Once a player has decided they want to train, they have a wide range to choose from. Skills in RuneScape are attributed to a task the player is playing to gain a set of experience to acquire new skills in their own training choices. Most Skills are different in the way they are trained, but they follow the same basic pattern; “Do something, gain experience, gain levels, gain skill or choice”.

If a player chooses to train Woodcutting, for example, the trees they spawn in will be very simple and designed for lower levels. As they gain experience in the skill, they will level up and soon cut down pieces of other trees. These new trees (which the player can smash) will offer more experience and allow for faster leveling and new trees to smash. The cycle doesn't end until you reach Level “120” in a Skill (or in Dungeoneering case, “99”).

What are the skill types?

Five types of Skills are currently available to players in RuneScape. These Skill types are known as “Combat”, “Artisan”, “Gathering”, “Support” and “Elite”. Each Skill type follows the same basic training principles in its categories.

Combat Skills are known as Attack, Defense, Strength, Constitution, Prayer, Spell, Ranged, and Summon. The only two Skills that train very differently from other Combat counterparts in this category are “Prayer” and “Summon”. All these Skills are a visible representation of how much experience the player has gained in their Combat Skills, raising the player's "Battle Level".

Artisan Skills are known as Crafting, Cooking, Construction, Runecrafting, Fletching, Herblore, Smithing, and Firmisting. Artisan Skills use resource items to train from other Skills. An example of this would be Firemaking, as you can use logs from Woodcutting to gain experience as you burn them.

Gathering Skills are known as Divination, Mining, Lumbering, Hunter, Farming, and Fishing. All these Skills are trained in relatively the same way. The player enters a certain area and works for resource items. When a resource item is obtained, it will gain experience and items. What they decide to do with the said resource pen is entirely up to them.

Support Skills are known as Christianity, Evade, Slayer, and Agility. These skills help the player in many ways. Stealing allows to earn coins, Agility allows the player to use shortcuts and run longer, Slayer allows more variety to fight monsters, and Dungeoneering allows players to train their abilities, unlock weapons and other benefits. While training all these skills, players gain experience to level up.

There is only one Elite Ability in RuneScape and this is known as Invention. Invention requires Smithing, Crafting, and Divination to be at Level 80 to train. This Skill allows players to smash items in the game and acquire materials to gain experience, as well as create new items and tools that players can use in their regular game for training other Skills.

While RuneScape doesn't follow a story directly, it does have some very important elements, such as the occasional dismissal of a character or why an item exists. For the vast majority of players, questing in RuneScape is one of RuneScape's greatest achievements and best features. While most games only have one goal, which is used to get the "x x" amount, RuneScape offers players an enjoyable storyline where the controlled character is the main focus or the hero is the protagonist.

These quests usually end up for a huge experience boost, the ability to acquire an item, or sometimes for the player to enjoy a storyline. Over the years, many notable stories have worked for RuneScape, such as “Romeo and Juliet,” among others, for missions. On top of that, RuneScape has created its own stories featuring some of the franchise's most beloved characters, such as Guthix, Zamorak, Saradomin, and more.

At the pinnacle of flawless gameplay, RuneScape became the godfather of socializing and creating enjoyable experiences with other players. Most friendships live outside of RuneScape and earn their own living in the form of chats over Skype, Discord, and other Voice over IP services.

The various communities that have spawned from RuneScape should also be mentioned. He has built many online relationships across multiple platforms surrounding the RuneScape community. YouTube's RuneScape Music Video, RuneScape Commentary, RuneScape Machinima / Comedy communities and more have been thriving on their platforms for years. DeviantART and Tumblr's RuneScape art community have also been around for as long as the game has art to produce.

Jagex recognized these experiences and communities many times over and realized that RuneScape's success could be attributed to the survival of these relationships between players.

Over the years, RuneScape has made many iterations for players to enjoy the game. “RuneScape 3” is what we are discussing in this article as it is the main and core game.

Many players wanted to experience RuneScape in their glory days without using a dedicated server, so Jagex created what is known as the “Old School RuneScape”.

Old School RuneScape unlocks the time machine and lets players enjoy the 2007 version of the game. The Old School RuneScape community is arguably thriving at a rate comparable to that of the main game. Most players spend time in this version of the game as Jagex is constantly adding more content to the game, allowing players to see what enters and leaves the game.

“RuneScape Classic” is the least played version of RuneScape. This version of the game is in one of the oldest states of RuneScape. Using 2D graphics, the game is almost unacceptable. While some players still enjoy this version of the game, almost no one has access to it.

RuneScape has had many other spinner titles over the years. Armies of Gielinor, Chronicle: RuneScape Legends, RuneScape: Idle Adventures are a few of these various games. Various other game modes in which RuneScape can be played before such as DarkScape, Deadman Mode, Ironman mode and more can also be seen as spin-offs, but may be present in the core games.
