Turkey's 5G Journey Started at Istanbul Airport

Turkey's G Journey Started From Istanbul Airport
Turkey's 5G Journey Started at Istanbul Airport

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu stated that the 5G tender will be held in 2023 and said, "We will spread the 5G spark that we started at Istanbul Airport, the transit center of the world, to all over our country with the work and vision of our 3 brave operators."

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu shared with the public the process regarding 5G at Istanbul Airport. Stating that as the Ministry, they closely follow the developments in the fields of communication as in all sectors, Karaismailoğlu said, “We are making a great effort to bring Turkey together with innovations that are beyond the age. As in transportation, we plan the communication infrastructure of our country with the mind of the state, evaluate it on an academic and scientific basis, and implement it with public-private sector cooperation. With the confidence of fulfilling what we promised for 20 years, we continue our work with investments that others cannot even dream of. In the communication sector, 5G is of course one of them. Information and communication technologies have been developing at a dizzying pace in recent years and their impact is increasing all over the world. With this rapid development, the classical ways of working, thinking and having fun are changing, and life is being moved to the electronic environment with new forms.”

OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE OUR NATION WITH THE SPEED TO COMPETE WITH THE WORLD

Using the expressions “Our goal is to provide our nation with speed that will compete with the world”, Karaismailoğlu said that 5G will completely reshape both professional and personal lives by enabling new use cases such as connected vehicles, augmented reality and advanced video and games. Karaismailoğlu, who noted that mobile technologies are developing rapidly, especially since mobile phones are one of the technologies most frequently used by human beings, continued his speech as follows;

“While 4G and 4,5G technologies have just entered human life, we suddenly found ourselves in 5G technologies. In fact, we are already talking about 6G. We think that even 5G will not be able to meet the speed and security targets in the targeted data flow in the future. In this respect, the use of domestic and national hardware and software in our electronic communication networks is important not only for reducing the current account deficit, but also for the defense and security policies of countries today. It is predicted that between 2020-2025, 1,1 trillion dollars will be invested in mobile networks in the world, and about 80 percent of this will be for 5G technology. This shows that there is a great potential in terms of both the domestic market and the foreign market. In such an environment, the development and development of countries that do not produce information, cannot transform the information they produce into products, and cannot market it to the world, seem difficult. That's why: I would like to remind you once again that we have to produce 5G technology, which is the key point of digital transformation, with domestic and national means. Our country will not be the follower, but the followed. All our business world, universities and young people will carry Turkey to the future it deserves by walking with us on this path we have opened as the state.

Pointing out that 5G has been used in the world for the last 2 years and that it is the fifth generation communication infrastructure that was first introduced with the developments on the 4G infrastructure and then the standards were determined, Karaismailoğlu listed the innovations that 5G technology will bring in the communication sector; “5G technology, which will carry the electronic communication sector to a higher level than the current voice, data and image transmission, is expected to bring innovations in many fields such as machine-to-machine communication, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, medical, machine learning and robotics. With low latency in 5G, it will be easier to deliver latency-sensitive innovative services such as robotics, smart vehicles and smart transportation systems. 5G will be a factor in the development and use of innovative applications by accelerating digital transformation in many areas such as automotive, industry, energy, health, agriculture, media and entertainment. Remember the early days of the pandemic. As millions move from home to work and study, fast, reliable internet has become a basic need. While millions of our citizens were working from home, the existing infrastructure in Turkey worked perfectly. We no longer go to banks and wait for hours for banking activities. We solve our business with government institutions via e-Government. In short, we make our life easier with the internet. Of course, we see these developments as important steps towards becoming an information society.”

THE SENSITIVE DATA TRIED TO BE SEALED BY CYBER ATTACKS IS THE DNA OF COUNTRIES

Emphasizing that Turkey needs high technology and value-added products in order to reach its 2023, 2053, 2071 targets, Karaismailoğlu said that 5G is one of them. Minister of Transport, Karaismailoğlu, said, “We aim to ensure effective and rapid digital transformation in vertical sectors that will be affected by 5G and beyond new generation communication technologies in our country. We are aware that domestic production technologies and applications with high added value to be developed during this transformation will contribute to the economic growth of our country. We consider the future of our information technologies industry under the following three headings; domestic production, high technology and global brand. We aim to increase our share in global value chains with original and innovative production, by achieving success in the information sector, which we define as a critical sector, in these three phases, by offering competitive products and services in high technology areas. In addition, we see 3G not only as a communication technology, but also among the priority issues in terms of the national security of our country. We are working to reach higher native rates in 5G. We protect our country's cyber security, that is, its privacy. We are a growing, developing country that plays for leadership in global competition. We are in sight, we have friends and foes. And the sensitive data that is tried to be captured by cyber attacks today is a kind of DNA of countries and nations. We aim to make Turkey a country that not only consumes technology, but actually designs, develops, produces and markets it to the world.” Said.

MORE THAN 1000 URAK BASE STATIONS HAVE BEEN COMMISSIONED

Reminding that the Communication Technologies Cluster, or HTK in short, was established, Karaismailoğlu said, “The Communication Technologies Cluster, which has been constantly developing since then, has become a large organization that includes more than 160 companies and more than 8 thousand employees and has an important position for the domestic production ecosystem. it happened. We have developed the 'End-to-End Domestic and National 5G Communication Network Project' by our HTK member companies and three mobile operators in order to meet the hardware and software needs on the road to 5G with domestic and national means. With the End-to-End Domestic and National 5G Communication Network Project, we develop critical network hardware and software specific to 5G technology, such as 5G base stations, 5G core network, 5G network management and operational software, and 5G virtualization platform. The prototype products developed in the project are being tested by the operators, and we made various demo demonstrations over domestic and national 4.5G base stations that can be connected to existing commercial 5G mobile networks. A 4,5G base station was also developed with the ULAK Project initiated by our Ministry and Defense Industry Presidency. The first domestic/national 4,5G ULAK base station developed in the project is used in more than 750 sites within the scope of universal service projects of our Ministry. ULAK base stations were commissioned in more than 1000 sites in our commercial networks. It encourages production, technological research and development activities, domestic and foreign investments in Turkey. We support the sustainable growth of our economy.”

ISTANBUL AIRPORT IS THE FIRST IN EUROPE WITH 5G AIRPORT

Pointing out that very important stages have been left behind in the field of communication, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu stated that the transformation of 5G technology should be considered as a large organization. Karaismailoğlu said, “It is almost time for our people to get 5g technology,” and added, “Today, we are experiencing another pride at the same time. The Istanbul Airport, which broke records with a record, no one can fly, they say they will not be successful even if they open it… Istanbul Airport will be given 75 billion euros to the state during the operation period, with an investment of 1 billion euros, without leaving a penny from the state, in an area of 10 million meters without economic value, without life and greenery. It has become one of the most successful projects in the world financially with its rental guarantee. We are proud to have achieved another first here. There is no award that Istanbul Airport did not receive, no record that it did not break. An average of 25 aircraft and an average of 1400 thousand passengers a day use Istanbul Airport at Istanbul Airport. He broke the all-time record with 230 flights on 8 July. Istanbul Airport, which is not satisfied with the records and world championships, has become the 'busiest' and 'best' airport in Europe. Istanbul Airport, the first in Europe, is becoming a 1422G airport today. Preliminary preparations have been completed for 5G coverage and 5G signal to subscribers whose infrastructure is provided by our operators in the regions determined at Istanbul Airport. We have also prepared studies where we can observe the advantages such as delay and speed in 5G applications and application areas of the operators. Today, we will see the stage Turkey has reached in its 5G journey at the stands set up by our domestic technology companies.”

OUR OPERATORS NEED TO SHOW THE STABILITY THAT WE SHOW

Expressing that the software and hardware investments of mobile network operators for mobile electronic communication technologies in Turkey were realized as approximately 2021 billion TL in 3,2, Karaismailoğlu said, “We produce hardware and software, most of which have been imported until today, with our own means, thus contributing to the economy, development, employment and economy of our country. We serve your security. Currently, the rate of 5G supported devices in our country is low, and with the increase in mobile phones that support 5G with software and hardware, our citizens will also be able to benefit from 5G services. It is an undeniable fact that 5G technologies are now indispensable for the coming years. Yes, very important distances have been covered so far, but now we will take this road with bigger steps. We will increase our investments to accelerate the transition to 5G technology and to expand it in wider geographies. We have provided all kinds of support with the Ministry and related institutions so far, and we will continue to do so in the future. Our operators should also show the same determination we show.”

NATIONALIZATION OF CRITICAL COMPONENTS FOR 5G AND BEYOND TECHNOLOGIES IS OUR PRIORITY

"Our Ministry has drawn an important vision for the sector with the 'domestic obligations' we determined in the 4.5G tender," said Transportation Karaismailoğlu and continued his speech as follows;

“We see that the domestic rate, which was 4.5 percent in the first investment period of 1G, exceeded 2020 percent as of the 2021-33 investment period. However, we do not find this ratio sufficient. First of all, we expect the operators to fulfill the 45 percent locality target. The nationalization of critical components for 5G and beyond technologies is also our main priority. On the way to 5G, we have taken important steps to support and protect the domestic and national production ecosystem. From now on, we will continue to develop the most appropriate solutions by taking the opinions of our sector stakeholders. Middle-aged and older generations know very well where Turkey has passed through in the field of electronic communication. While the volume of the information and communication technologies sector was 2003 billion TL in 20, it increased to 2021 billion TL by the end of 189. In the field of informatics, we grew by 2022 percent in the first quarter of 21 compared to the same period of the previous year. We increased our fiber line length from 88 thousand to 478 thousand kilometers. In the last 20 years, we have increased our fixed broad line subscribers from 20 to 18,5 million. We increased the number of fiber subscribers in fixed infrastructures from 154 thousand to 5 million. The number of our mobile subscribers reached 87,5 million. Our broadband subscribers reached 89 million. Our M2M subscribers reached 8 million. While these great developments were taking place in the sector, we reduced the average tariff fee, which was 8,6 cents per minute ten years ago, to 1,5 cents. In the first quarter of 2022, we increased the amount of internet usage by 25 percent in fixed and 35 percent in mobile compared to the same period of the previous year.

WE WILL GET ACCESS TO OUR 6G WORK IN THE COMING PERIOD

Noting that TÜRKSAT 5B, Turkey's most efficient and powerful satellite, has been put into service recently, Karaismailoğlu said, “TÜRKSAT 5B; It has a wide coverage area including the whole of the Middle East, the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, North and East Africa, South Africa and its close neighbors. We will also provide high-speed broadband internet service over our new satellite. In the last 20 years, we have invested more than 183 billion dollars in our country's transportation and communication infrastructure. We contributed more than 520 billion dollars to our national legacy with our investments. We aim to make transportation and communication investments of 2053 billion dollars until 198. In this process, we also planned our communication investments of 68 billion dollars. We aim to increase the size of our communications sector from TL 266 billion to TL 1,5 trillion with the investments we make. In the short term, we will increase the mobile broadband subscriber density to 100 percent and deliver 100 megabit-second internet service to every home. We will complete our 5G infrastructure and put it at the service of our entire nation. We will also accelerate our 6G efforts in the coming period. We will weave our country in digital ways. By increasing our fiber network length from 478 thousand kilometers to 1 million kilometers, we will become one of the 10 largest satellite operators in the world that can serve on a global scale with our expanding satellite fleet and international collaborations. We will contribute 2053 trillion dollars to production and 198 trillion dollars to national income with a total transportation and communication investment of 2 billion dollars, which we will realize from today until 1. As the Ministry, we will continue to do whatever is necessary for the development of both the transportation and communication sectors, taking into account our country's interests.”

WE WILL EXPAND OUR COUNTRY WITH THEIR WORK ON 3 BABAYİĞİT OPERATORS

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Karaismailoğlu stated that Turkey's communication infrastructure was planned with the mind of the state, evaluated on academic and scientific grounds and implemented with public-private sector cooperation, as in transportation, and said, “These are being prepared within the framework of the policies and strategies prepared by our governments under the leadership of our President. We implement all our works with the consciousness of being local and national. We will quickly carry out a comprehensive study with all sectors that will be affected by 5G, and we will make our country ready for the technology of the future as soon as possible. In the process after the 2023G tender we will hold in 5, we will use the next time in the most efficient way to develop these products and use them both in our domestic and foreign markets. Today, we will have the opportunity to experience important examples of what we can do with 5G technology together, and we will spread the 5G spark that we started at Istanbul Airport, the transit center of the world, all over our country, with the work and vision of our 3 fatherly operators. In our country, by 2023, it will continue on its way by making significant and serious breakthroughs in 5G technology, which refers to the 5th generation mobile technology, in order to spread this technology. We will have the opportunity to experience the different features of 5G installed at their stands by our GSM operators at Istanbul Airport. We will start making the 5G service available at the airport available to subscribers whose phones are 5G supported and subscribed to 5G. Our subscribers, who have a 5G supported terminal, will be able to benefit from 5G at Istanbul Airport.”
