TÜBİTAK BİLGEM and MEXT started to work on exoskeleton control by classifying the EEG signal collected from the human brain with artificial intelligence-based methods.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is the method of measuring the continuous rhythmic electrical potential changes that occur spontaneously during brain activity with electrodes placed on the scalp/hairless skin.

EEG is one of the methods used to measure activity in the brain. The fact that it is non-invasive and easy to collect data has paved the way for the development of brain computer interface (BCI) systems using EEG signals.

BCI systems are basically based on the conversion of the electrical activity of the brain into commands transmitted to the devices in the outside world by using the EEG signal. BCI systems today find application and research areas in prosthetic and assistive device control, mood and cognitive workload measurements. The exoskeleton, which is used as an aid in order to increase the capacity of the human in situations where physical workloads are intense, has also been an application area for BCI systems in this context.

In this context, studies were started to collect EEG signals from the person during the lifting of different weights with the exoskeletons used in the MEXT smart factory infrastructure.

As a result, the use of EEG signal is being investigated in terms of gaining wearable technology for the control of the exoskeleton.
