TCDD Censored Accident Statistics in This Year's Reports
TCDD Censored Accident Statistics in 2021 Reports

It turned out that TCDD, which includes data on train accidents in its reports every year, censored accident statistics in its reports this year. The General Directorate of TCDD Management, which is affiliated to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, explained the accidents that occurred in the last year and how these accidents occurred, with the title of “Accidents Related to Train Operations” in their annual reports.

According to the news of İsmail Arı from BirGün; It was seen that the section titled “Accidents Related to Train Operations” was not included in the 2021 Annual Report of TCDD, which was announced recently. There was no information on why this part was omitted from the report. However, many train accidents occurred in 2021.

Here are some train crashes that only happened in the past year:

  • October 29, 2021: The passenger train in Gebze district of Kocaeli crashed. While the last two wagons of the train were derailed, TCDD announced that there was no loss of life in the accident.
  • September 4, 2021: In the Ergene district of Tekirdağ, the freight train crashed into the factory service minibus at the level crossing. 6 people died in the accident, 7 people were injured.
  • September 8, 2021: The train, which makes the Adapazarı-Pendik expedition, crashed into the High Speed Train (YHT) waiting at Tuzla Shipyard Station. It was stated that the mechanic stopped at the last moment and hit the High Speed Train lightly, while some passengers were injured.
  • September 15, 2021: Two people were injured when a freight train hit a light commercial vehicle at an uncontrolled level crossing in the Dörtyol district of Hatay.

According to the information in the activity reports of TCDD for previous years, a total of 2018 accidents occurred on the railways in 2019, 2020 and 183. It was not disclosed how many people were injured or died in these accidents. According to the old activity reports that TCDD did not publish without censorship, there were 2018 railway accidents in 71, 2019 in 56 and 2020 in 56.

THE FACTS ARE HIDING

İsmail Özdemir, Secretary General of the United Transport Employees Union (BTS), reacted to TCDD's censorship of accident data in his assessment to BirGün. Saying "TCDD should be objective", Özdemir said:

“It is not right to hide these accidents. Where will they go by hiding the truth? Statistics of these accidents should be kept and the deficiencies causing the accidents should be corrected. As a union, we warn TCDD officials from time to time by sending articles, but the necessary seriousness is not shown. Our warnings must be heeded. Employees are being paid too much overtime. We also notified the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, but no action was taken. For example, the workload of machinists is very high. According to the Occupational Health Law, a worker can work 270 hours of overtime per year. However, TCDD employs 200 hours of overtime in a month.”

WILL BUILD A MUSEUM

In the 2021 Annual Report of TCDD, it was announced that the institution will establish an accident museum. In the report, it was stated that “Coordination with other units has been ensured by carrying out the work of the commission established for the establishment of an accident museum and the creation of a safety awareness wagon in order to learn and learn from the accidents we have experienced in the past years in the infrastructure of our Corporation.” It was also stated that the institution sold 2021 million TL of real estate in 18,8.
