Izmir Metropolitan Municipality organized a "Towards a Smart and Sustainable Izmir" workshop in line with the "smart city Izmir" goal. At the opening of the workshop organized in cooperation with the World Bank, President Soyer drew attention to social wealth, unity and empathy in determining the smart city vision and roadmap.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality continues its efforts to make Izmir a smarter and more sustainable city. The workshop “Towards a Smart and Sustainable İzmir” organized in cooperation with the World Bank within the scope of the Global Smart City Program (GSCP) started at the Historical Coal Gas Plant. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor attended the workshop organized to shape the future of Izmir and create a roadmap for smart city implementation. Tunç Soyer, Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Deputy General Manager of Geographical Information Systems Hüseyin Bayraktar, Deputy Secretary General of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Barış Karcı, international experts from the World Bank, representatives of private sector and non-governmental organizations, academics and municipal bureaucrats. The smart city strategy of Izmir will be discussed at the workshop, which will last until July 8, 2022.
President Soyer announced the criteria for the roadmap
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the workshop, the President Tunç Soyer, said that Izmir, which has an extraordinary potential to lead developments, is supported by the World Bank within the scope of the Global Smart City Program and this is very valuable. Stating that they are working to make İzmir a smarter and more sustainable city and that this workshop will make important contributions to them in shaping their smart city vision, Soyer said: “İzmir is a pioneering city. İzmir realized the first of many things in Anatolia. İzmir is a city with many identities, many voices and differences. We need three criteria when shaping the smart city vision. The first is the richness created by the differences in nature and biodiversity. Differences within societies also make society rich and beautiful. First of all, you have to accept this. We need to accept that we are together with people who think differently and look differently. Latter; The population of İzmir is 4.5 million. Everyone needs to understand that this wheel must have a cog. No more, no less. Everyone is a part of this. When you attribute a greater meaning to yourself, others may begin to see yourself as meaningless. However, everything starts with acknowledging that the wheel has cogs. Finally, empathy. I think empathy is also very important for creating a smart city. In other words, we need to reason about these issues before the questions of digital tools and how we will use and enrich technology.”
İzmir is ahead of other cities in the use of smart applications
Hüseyin Bayraktar, Deputy General Manager of Geographical Information Systems at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, said that İzmir is a different city in many areas, and that they have seen this from time to time through their work. Stating that they asked citizens around the country questions about smart cities, Bayraktar stated that according to these results, İzmir is ahead of other cities in the use of smart applications.

World Bank Smart Cities Chief Advisor Graham Colclough stated that they will focus on the opportunities of cities in the three-day workshop and said, “I want to transform cities globally. I am passionate about Izmir. Something can be done in Izmir and there are opportunities for that. "What we're trying to do today is to do everything as well as possible," he said.
