Minister Ersoy Watched 'Carmen' Opera at the 13th International Istanbul Opera Festival

Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, organized by the General Directorate of State Opera and Ballet “13. He watched the opera "Carmen" at the International Istanbul Opera Festival.

The work, staged by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet, met with art lovers at the Haliç Cultural Center Open Air Stage. Art lovers showed great interest in the work, which was watched by the General Director of the State Opera and Ballet Murat Karahan. Culture and Tourism Minister Ersoy applauded the artists standing at the end of the work.

Famous Romanian mezzo-soprano Ramona Zaharia played the role of “Carmen” in the opera, “Don Jose” was interpreted by Ali Murat Erengül and “Escamillo” was interpreted by Murat Güney.

Gülbin Günay as “Micaela”, Göktuğ Alpaşar as “Zuniga”, Utku Bayburt as “Morales”, Anna Sirel Etyemez as “Frasquita”, Elif Tuba Tekışık as “Mercedes”, Alp Köksal as “Le Dancarie” and as “Le Remendado” Onur Turan took the stage.

“Carmen”, one of the world's outstanding opera works and one of the most staged operas around the world, was prepared with the production of the famous Italian Director Vincenzo Grisostomi Travaglini and the choreography of Ayşem Sunal Savaşkurt.

In the show, Zdravko Lazarov conducted the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Orchestra, while Paolo Villa was the choirmaster.

The work, signed by the French composer Georges Bizet, with the libretto by Ludovic Halevy and Henri Meilhac, was harshly criticized when it was first staged in Paris in 1875. The opera “Carmen” gained worldwide fame after the death of Georges Bizet.

The story of the opera, which took place in Seville, Spain in the 1830s, is as follows:

“The protagonist of the work is Carmen, a beautiful, fiery and easily distracted gypsy girl who works as a worker in a tobacco factory. Carmen is fascinated by the soldier Don Jose, and she lures him out of the respectable life she belongs to and lives with him in the mountains. However, after a while, Carmen's love ended and a new person entered her life. Don Jose, on the other hand, has no intention of easily letting go of the woman for whom he risked so much trouble.”

The decor design of the three-act work was done by Zeki Sarayoğlu, the costume design was made by Ayşegül Alev, and the lighting design was done by Giovanni Pirandello.
