The Eastern Region Integrated Solid Waste Facility, which was brought to the city by the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, still produces 6 megawatts of energy per hour and will reach a production of 12 megawatts / hour by the end of the year, was put into service with a ceremony attended by the Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum.

Thanks to the Eastern Region Integrated Solid Waste Facility, which is among the projects implemented by Bursa Metropolitan Municipality within the scope of its efforts to combat climate change, Bursa's domestic wastes are transformed into electrical energy. With this project, both electrical energy is produced and the amount of waste going to the site is reduced by half. After the mixed municipal wastes coming to the facility are sorted 'according to their type' in the mechanical separation facility, the organic wastes are taken to the biogas facility and electricity is produced from methane gas. Residual wastes are sent to the landfill, wastes with calorific value are sent to the 'waste-derived' fuel preparation facility, and recyclable wastes are sent to licensed companies. Thanks to these processes, there is a 50 percent reduction in the amount of waste going to the site. With the commissioning of two tanks at the biogas facility, approximately 6 megawatts of energy is still being produced per hour, while its capacity will reach 3 megawatts/hour with the 12 tanks to be commissioned by the end of the year. When the investment is completed, the facility, which will meet the energy needs of approximately 75 thousand houses, was put into service with a ceremony attended by the Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum.

Our priority is the environment

Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Alinur Aktaş, who spoke at the opening ceremony of the facility, said that they always want Bursa to be clean and greener. Explaining that they attach importance to environmental investments with the aim of making Bursa a healthier city, Mayor Aktaş said, “Treatment plants, stream improvement works, efforts to bring new green areas to the city, creating park areas, rearranging streets and squares, square arrangements, integrated waste management, industry. While we implement many projects such as inventory, excavation and inspection of construction debris wastes, we display an environmentally friendly management approach. We promised the residents of Bursa 1,5 million square meters of green space. We have updated this target as 3 million square meters with the contribution of our Ministry. At the point we have reached, we have reached the figure of 1 million 421 thousand square meters. With the ongoing and planned works, we will have brought a green area exceeding 3 million square meters to Bursa by the end of the term.”

40 million dollar investment

Explaining that the solid waste sector is among the factors affecting greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change, President Aktaş stated that they are trying to bring integrated facilities that will provide energy production from waste and raw material recovery to the city. Emphasizing that there is no wild storage in Bursa anymore, Mayor Aktaş said that they divide the daily 3700 tons of domestic waste generated in the city into two as east and west basins. Stating that the area, which has been serving as a sanitary landfill since 2012 in the eastern region, has been transformed into an integrated solid waste disposal facility with an investment of approximately 25 million dollars, Mayor Aktaş said, “When the facility is completed, a total of 40 million dollars will be invested. Currently, the facility addresses 583 districts with a population of 586 thousand 5 people located in the eastern region of Bursa. 12 percent of Bursa's total municipal waste is utilized in this facility. When the facility reaches full capacity at the end of the year, 1 percent of Bursa's total waste will be utilized in the facility, which will appeal to 408 districts with a population of 660 million 8 thousand 40 people.

They have no intention of doing business

Reminding that within the scope of the zero waste project in Bursa, the recovery rate in total municipal waste is 4 percent, Mayor Aktaş said that the recovery rate will increase to 25 percent with the completion of the facility investment. Emphasizing that the Yenikent Solid Waste Storage area has completed its life, Mayor Aktaş said, “Someone has no intention of doing business. They can't even imagine what we've done. They said, 'We are not against the facility, we are against it'. We have been struggling seriously for 4-5 years to pass all stages. Necessary approvals were obtained from all institutions. But they are still trying to mislead the people of the region with false statements. We started the work. The site selection work for the facility, which is planned to be built for the remaining 60 percent of the city's waste, has been completed. EIA positive decision was also taken. The first phase of the facility is planned to be commissioned in 2024. At the same time, we made a very ambitious promise at the beginning of the term where the old facility is located. We had set the goal of removing this facility, which is located in the heart of the city and affects the population of 11 thousand on the periphery of 300 neighborhoods. Together with the support and contributions we have received, we will bring the West Solid Waste Integrated Facility to Bursa, just like the industrial facility. We receive serious support from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. Green suits every city, but green suits Bursa separately. Bursa is a city identified with green. We have a desire to regain some of the green we lost. This facility is also a part of it.”

2 billion investment

Murat Kurum, Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, also said that today the total investment value of Bursa has reached 2 billion liras; He said that they will present 3.689 projects and 541 infrastructure projects, including 6 residences and 15 shops. Stating that climate change is undoubtedly one of the biggest environmental problems in the world, Minister Kurum reminded that Turkey, a Mediterranean country, is among the countries most affected by climate change. Reminding that one of the most special works on the environment is the Zero Waste Mobilization that surrounds Turkey, the Institution said, “With this global environmental movement, which is taken as an example all over the world, Bursa's Gölyazı, Uludağ, İznik Lake, Longoz Forests, centuries-old plane tree in İnkaya, each more precious than the other. We protect our wealth. We contribute to our economy by transforming our waste, create new employment opportunities for our children, and offer them a good future. Our Eastern Region Solid Waste Integrated Facility, which we opened, is one of the most successful examples of these investments.

Success story

Stating that they set a very important target regarding recycling at the Climate Council, to which Bursa Metropolitan Municipality and Uludağ University also made great contributions, the Institution said, “We will increase our recovery rate to 2035 percent by 60, We will not accept storage. Why is this determination so important? Look, we have increased our recovery rate from 2053 percent to 13 percent with the Zero Waste Movement. This means an economic gain of 28 billion liras. Saving millions of trees means clean air, clean water, clean seas. This is a success story. Our Eastern Region Integrated Solid Waste Facility, which we offer to our brothers from Bursa, will help us pave the way to our goal. This facility, which serves 98 districts in the eastern region of Bursa, will hopefully reach full capacity by the end of the year. It will transform 5 percent of Bursa's total waste and turn waste into economic value. At the same time, the energy to be obtained from here will meet the energy needs of our 40 thousand houses. Well, will we be satisfied with this facility? We will quickly build a sibling of this in the western region. Our municipality is working feverishly at this point. Now here we all promise together. We will continue to be with our municipality. We will complete our western facility in 75, we will bring wastes to the economy in the whole of Bursa, we will make Bursa's economy and the healthy future of our offspring the strongest.”

Müfit Aydın, Deputy Chairman of the Environment Commission of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and Bursa Deputy, stated that in 20 years, Bursa has taken a significant distance to the point of ending air and water pollution. Stating that exemplary steps have been taken for Turkey in the field of solid waste, Aydın said, “The Western Waste Integrated Facility will be completed and put into service in a short time. Every raw material has value. In these facilities, enough energy will be produced for İnegöl. Bursa deserves the best of everything. Protecting the environment is our obligation to the future. I wish the facility to be beneficial for our city," he said.

Bursa Governor Yakup Canbolat reminded that the facility, which was put into service, is important in order to leave a livable environment for future generations. Stating that solid wastes created by man are among the most important environmental problems, Governor Canbolat said, “As a country, we have always respected the nature of our world. I would like to thank Bursa Metropolitan Municipality for bringing the facility to the city.

After the speeches, the Minister Institution, President Aktaş and the accompanying protocol cut the opening ribbon accompanied by prayers together with the employees who contributed to the construction of the facility.

At the end of the program, Doğanlar Holding Deputy Chairman of the Board Adnan Doğan and Biotrend Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors Osman Nuri Vardı presented the Seyit Corporal statue made by the lecturer Sculptor Rüçhan Keçeci with the waste from the facility to the Minister Institution and the janissary statue to the President Aktaş.
