Beware of Meat Allergy in Eid-al-Adha!

Pediatric Allergy, Chest Diseases Specialist and President of the Food Allergy Association Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akçay made statements that meat allergy is a health problem that impairs quality of life and is life-threatening.

Chest Diseases Specialist Akçay made the following statements about meat allergy:

Red meat allergy is a type of health problem

Akçay said, “Actually, one out of every 5 children with milk allergy may experience a meat allergy after consumption of red meat. The reflection of the allergy in the body, which can be seen about 30 minutes after consuming meat, may occur in the form of reactions such as redness, itching, difficulty in breathing, and abdominal pain. said.

Emphasizing that it is necessary to be very careful during the Feast of Sacrifice, Akçay continued as follows:

“Findings such as diarrhea or abdominal cramps after consuming red meat are often attributed to the fact that the consumed meat is spoiled or unhygienic. If symptoms are observed in foods that are repeatedly consumed, regardless of the amount consumed, this indicates that the patient should be evaluated from the focus of meat allergy. This group is in the life-threatening allergy group.

A person who is allergic to red meat group may also develop an allergy to other meat groups. This is true for each group of animal protein. If allergic symptoms occur after consuming white and red meat, it is definitely useful to make an appointment with an allergist and evaluate the patient's condition. Meat allergy is a life-threatening reaction. Allergic reactions may occur even if consumed in trace amounts. For this reason, it is very important that they do not primarily consume meat. We prescribe auto injectors for people with a diagnosis of meat allergy. If individuals have such doubts and have previously experienced redness, itching, diarrhea, difficulty in breathing, and stomachache after meat consumption, it would be beneficial not to consume meat during Eid al-Adha.

Stating that reactions are seen against the substances in the tick saliva in people who are specifically exposed to tick bites, and that these substances are similar to some molecules in red meat, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akçay made the following statements:

“In people who are sensitive to allergies, problems related to red meat consumption may occur after the development of allergy. For this reason, the occurrence of cross-reaction between tick saliva and red meat triggers the allergic state between the said red meat and tick bite. Some drug allergies can also be seen frequently due to cross-reaction in those with this type of allergy.

Blood and skin tests should be performed in patients with red meat allergy reactions. In fact, when deemed appropriate for a definitive diagnosis, a red meat challenge test can be applied under the supervision of a doctor. Patients with a definite diagnosis of red meat allergy should not eat meat. Cooking meat does not always mean that it loses its allergic properties, and in this case, red meat should be avoided completely. Patients with severe meat allergies, on the other hand, need to be very careful when they eat anywhere outside the home. In addition, during the Eid al-Adha, it is very difficult to digest foods such as roasting and frying made from sacrificial meat. It delays gastric emptying and causes health problems such as reflux and gastritis, along with the effect of greasy nutrition making it difficult to digest.

Meat allergy can be prevented

prof. Dr. Ahmet Akçay emphasized that it is very important to raise awareness of the public on general issues related to food-borne food allergies and avoidance of anaphylaxis.
