Instruction for Agricultural Control against Meadow Caterpillars in Sunflower from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry

Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM) Phytosanitary Research Department, in order to combat meadow caterpillars, especially in sunflower planted areas, in the Thrace Region, “Technical Instructions for Grasshopper Crop Control in Sunflowers” was prepared and sent to the stakeholders.

The Ministry has launched a fight against the meadow caterpillars that have invaded the sunflower fields in recent days.

According to the information contained in the "Technical Instructions for Agricultural Control for Meadow Caterpillars in Sunflower" prepared by the Ministry, adult butterflies are migratory insects and act en masse. The creature lays its eggs, especially on the underside of the leaves of vinegar and other weeds. The larvae feed on the leaves, buds and flowers of plants. Therefore, cultural measures are of great importance in the fight against meadow caterpillar. In autumn, the fields must be plowed deeply so that some of the pupa cocoons fall deep and the butterflies cannot come to the surface of the soil.

On the other hand, some cocoons remain on the surface of the soil and become food for birds or are adversely affected by the winter cold. In the fight against pests, weed control in the spring is also of great importance.

First of all, since the eggs are left to the weeds, it is necessary to destroy the eggs and larvae and prevent them from causing damage to the cultivated plants.

In addition, maintaining weed control in cultivated plants provides the same benefit. Early mowing of forage crops such as alfalfa, clover and clover stands out as an important method for reducing the population.

Soil cultivation with disc harrow should be done in the spring and sowing should be early.

Among the instructions, for chemical control, walking zigzag in the diagonal direction of the field and starting the fight when 25 larvae are detected per square meter, every 30-10 meters.

The fight should be done against the third instar larvae at the latest.

WORKS IN THRACE

Oil sunflower cultivation area in Turkey is 8 million 113 thousand decares and production is around 2 million 215 thousand.

In the Thrace Region, the Thrace Agricultural Research Institute of TAGEM and the provincial agriculture and forestry directorates carry out coordinated studies regarding the damage of meadow caterpillars in sunflowers.

In this context, at the beginning of July, adults of meadow caterpillars began to be seen more intensely than ever before. On the other hand, no damage was detected in any place where adult individuals were concentrated.

The total cultivated area in Edirne is 1 million 73 thousand 508 decares and its production is approximately 285 thousand tons. Meadow caterpillar damage was observed in Uzunköprü, Meriç, Keşan, Enez and İpsala districts, which correspond to approximately 700 thousand decares of cultivation area of the province.

Pests were detected in 10-15 percent of the area in question, and these areas were sprayed with ground tools and drones. Damage was noticed more intensely especially in late plantings.

50 PERCENT FIELD IS MEDICINED IN KIRKLARELİ

In Kırklareli, the cultivation area of sunflower is 911 thousand 619 decares and the production is around 226 thousand tons.

In the villages of Merkez, Lüleburgaz, Babaeski, Pınarhisar, Kofçaz, Vize, Pehlivanköy districts that are planted late and have not been successful in weed control, products such as corn clover, mainly sunflower, a total area of 900 thousand decares, 200 thousand decares of an area of approximately 150 thousand decares are economically viable. damage exceeded the threshold.

After the pest control efforts, 50 percent of the total area is still sprayed, while the remaining area continues to be sprayed.

Drones at work

In Istanbul, the total cultivated area is 181 thousand decares and around 49 thousand tons of production is carried out.

While the pest is mostly seen in Çatalca, Silivri, Arnavutköy and Büyükçekmece districts on an area of approximately 20 thousand decares (approximately 10 percent of the total planting), ground tools and drones are being struggled. 3 drones are actively working in Istanbul.

While the total area of sunflower cultivation in Tekirdağ is approximately 1 million 663 thousand decares, the production is approximately 399 thousand tons. The fight against ground instruments and drones continues.

The pest was detected in an area of approximately 40 thousand decares in Süleymanpaşa Bıyıkali, Banarlı, Karacaklavuz, Ortaca and Karahalil towns.

Intense contamination was observed in the fields where the vinegar weed (htır) was not handled or in the field borders where this weed was found. Within the scope of the struggle, 18 drones are working.

Sakarya Corn Research Institute also reported that pests were detected in the province in question.
