Record Increase of 923 Percent in Poppy Seed Exports

White poppy, one of Turkey's traditional export products, went on a trip to India after a 2,5-year hiatus. While Turkey exported 2022 thousand 15 tons of white poppy to India in May and June of 712, it earned 67 million 380 thousand dollars in foreign currency income.

Poppy seed exports, which were 2021 million dollars in the first half of 7,9, climbed to 2022 million dollars with a record increase of 923 percent with the opening of the Indian market in the January-June period of 81.

Informing that the biggest export market of Turkish white poppy is India, Aegean Cereals, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Exporters' Association President Muhammet Öztürk shared the information that exports, which had been interrupted for 2,5 years due to the pandemic, started again in May 2022.

Noting that they initially received a quota of 17 tons by India, Öztürk said, "India approved the export of 500 tons of white poppy between 9 May 2022 and 9 June 2022. We were able to use 15 percent of the quota. In return, we brought our country 746 million dollars in foreign currency. Our poppy seed exports, which were $90 million in the first half of 67,3, exceeded $2021 million with an increase of 7,9 percent with the opening of the export path to India in 2022. Our poppy producers and exporters experienced great happiness after a break of 923 years.”

While 75,5 million dollars slice of Turkey's poppy seed exports was white poppy, blue poppy exports were recorded as 5,5 million dollars and yellow poppy exports as 87 thousand dollars. After India, the countries to which poppy seeds are exported the most were Nepal with 4 million dollars and the United States with 1,3 million dollars.
