United Nations Renamed 'Turkey' to 'Turkey'

The United Nations (UN) changed the name of the country, which is used as "Turkey" in foreign languages, to "Turkey" after Turkey's request. In the circular published in the Official Gazette with the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, it was noted that the expression "Made in Turkey" would be used instead of "Made in Turkey" in export products.

BM sözcüTurkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, requesting that Turkey's name in foreign languages be changed to "Turkey", and announced that the request was approved and entered into force.

Turkey has been using "Turkey" instead of Turkey as the country name on international platforms since December 2021.

In the circular published in the Official Gazette, the following statements were included:

“In the studies carried out with this understanding at home and abroad; Paying great attention to the deep-rooted and historical values of the Turkish nation, the "Turkey" brand has been accepted as the umbrella brand of our country in national and international media.

“The phrase Turkey represents and expresses the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish nation in the best way possible. In this context, the phrase "Made in Turkey" was used instead of "Made in Turkey" in our export products, and our products, which are the pride of our country in international trade, were introduced with the phrase "Turkey" and brought to the whole world. From now on, it is aimed to represent the thousands of years of experience of our state and nation in every field under the brand of 'Turkey'.

In this context, within the scope of strengthening the 'Turkey' brand, 'Turkey', 'Turkei', 'Turquie' etc. in all kinds of activities and correspondence, especially in official relations with other states and international institutions and organizations. Necessary sensitivity will be shown on the use of the phrase 'Turkey' instead of phrases.”
