About 340 miles southeast of Tehran in Iran, a passenger train traveling from Tabas to Yazd derailed. According to initial reports, 17 people lost their lives and 50 were injured in the incident.

A passenger train partially derailed in eastern Iran early Wednesday, killing at least 17 people and injuring 50, including some critically, officials said. Initial details of the disaster involving the train with about 350 passengers remain unclear, but it is feared that the death toll could rise.

Tabas Special Governor Ali Akbar Rahimi announced that four train cars were derailed and the Red Crescent, emergency and railway rescue units were deployed to the site.

Sharing information about the number of dead and injured, Rahimi stated that this number may increase due to the seriousness of the accident. In addition to ambulances, helicopters were also sent to the area where the accident took place.

Rahimi stated that according to the first determinations, 350 people on the train with 17 passengers lost their lives and 5 people were injured, 30 of them seriously.

He stated that 50 Red Crescent teams have been sent to the region where the train derailed at the 6th kilometer of Mezino station and that the work of the rescue teams continues.

It is stated that the train crashed into a construction machine while cruising.
