Dozens of important projects have been implemented, from integrated solid waste disposal facilities to waste water treatment facilities, from recycling wastewater and its use in agriculture, to rail system investments that minimize carbon emissions in transportation. The foundations of many exemplary projects for Turkey in green infrastructure were laid. In addition, İzmir became the national champion of WWF's One World Cities Competition.

In line with this goal, important projects and investments have been implemented since 2019. In addition to the establishment of the Climate Change and Environmental Protection Control Department within the municipality, the 'İzmir Green City Action Plan' and the 'Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan' were put into practice. With the Climate Action Plan, it was aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 percent until 40 in İzmir. A Green City Action Plan in line with international standards was prepared for Izmir for the first time in Turkey. The Strategy for Living in Harmony with Nature, which is a summary of these two plans, was announced last year. In order to reduce the effects of the global climate crisis and to build a resilient city, many environmentalist investments have been implemented, from transportation to solid waste facilities, from treatment facilities to eco-parks. The foundations of many exemplary projects for Turkey were laid in order to increase the green infrastructure.

İzmir, the national champion of the One World Cities Competition

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which has implemented its projects with the goal of zero carbon in 2030 against the climate crisis, became the champion of Turkey in the international One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) organized by WWF. He is also the Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. 339 million TL income from garbage, which has become an energy source

Ödemiş Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility, which was put into service in 2021 to serve the south axis of İzmir, has an energy capacity of 20,28 MWe. Currently, 7,8 Mwe energy is produced at the facility. This figure is equivalent to meeting the electricity needs of 116 thousand households. The Bergama Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility, which was put into service, has an energy capacity of 9.898 MWe. Currently, 5,64 Mwe of energy is produced at the facility. This figure is equivalent to meeting the electricity needs of 58 thousand households.

Izmir's garbage has become a source of energy and income for Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which is processed in Harmandalı, Ödemiş and finally Bergama. As of May 2022, a total of 339 million TL income has been obtained from the facilities since the process of starting the operations until today.

The tender for the installation of the Bioreactor Systems and Solid Organic Fertilizer Production Facility based on the 24-hour basis of vegetable origin park and garden wastes, branch and knot wastes, grass wastes, market place and market wastes, and the establishment of the Solid Organic Fertilizer Production Facility, was made within the scope of the State Tender Law No. 2886. The installation process of the facility continues.

Special facility for medical waste
During the pandemic process of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Menemen Medical Waste Sterilization Facility with a capacity of 110 tons per day was put into service.

Agricultural packaging waste is collected
Special bags were delivered to 71 producers engaged in agricultural production in the greenhouses area of ​​Menderes Değirmendere Village, in which they could collect agricultural packaging waste, and the agricultural packaging wastes collected in special bags began to be collected regularly with vehicles belonging to the licensed packaging waste collection company of the district municipality under the supervision of expert personnel. All agricultural packaging waste collected within the scope of the project will be recycled and will contribute to the economy within the scope of the "İzmir Recycling Mobilization" project implemented by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality within the framework of its zero waste policy. To date, 4,2 tons of agricultural packaging waste has been collected.

recycling campaign
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality organized the Waste Batteries Collection Campaign this year as well. From the beginning of the project, a total of 435,6 tons of waste batteries were collected within the borders of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality.

Under the leadership of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, the "Recycling Mobilization" project was initiated in order to spread the recycling culture, which is of great importance in order to leave a livable environmental legacy to future generations, throughout the city. Zero Waste Certificate was obtained for İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Presidency Building, Main Service Building, Ahmet Adnan Saygun Art Center, Machinery Supply Maintenance and Repair Department, Oğuzlar Additional Service Building, İZFAŞ and Eşrefpaşa Hospital. The process continues for other units.

Wastewater is being reused
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality İZSU General Directorate establishes recycling units in the treatment plants for the use of water from advanced biological wastewater treatment plants in agricultural irrigation, urban green areas and suitable industrial processes. The manufacturing of the Bayındır Hasköy Waste Water Treatment Plant recovery unit has been completed. The "A class irrigation water" quality water to be obtained from the units will be used in agriculture.

Efforts to establish a recycling unit at Çeşme Reisdere Wastewater Treatment Plant continue. The water recovered from this facility will be used in urban green spaces. These investments will be followed by Ödemiş Wastewater Treatment Plant and Tire Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant. The biggest step in this area will be the recovery units planned to be installed in Çiğli Waste Water Treatment Plant. Çiğli Waste Water Treatment Plant has a daily capacity of 605 thousand cubic meters.

Rainwater harvest has begun
As part of the efforts to combat the climate crisis, the first example of the Rainwater Harvest Project was implemented in the Aşık Veysel Recreation Area.

Izmir, Turkey's leader in wastewater treatment
Since 2019, within the scope of the sustainable environment mission, a total of 750 kilometers of new sewer lines and existing lines have been renewed. According to the latest data published by the Turkish Statistical Institute on the wastewater treatment of cities, İzmir became the leading city of Turkey in terms of the number of treatment plants in European Union standards, the amount of water treated with advanced biological method per capita, and the city titles where EU standards are highly applied in treatment. In İzmir, which has 951 wastewater treatment plants with a daily capacity of 971 thousand 69 cubic meters, the ratio of the number of people benefiting from wastewater treatment services to the urban population reached 98,6%, while the rate of advanced biological wastewater treatment reached 97,2%.

Kemalpaşa Ulucak, Karaburun Mordoğan, Foça Gerenköy wastewater treatment plants were completed. The construction of the second phase, which will increase the capacity of Torbalı Wastewater Treatment Plant by 2,5 times, continues. With the second phase under construction at the Ayrancılar-Yazıbaşı Wastewater Treatment Plant, the treatment capacity will increase nearly 3 times.

Intensive work for a clean gulf
Since 2019, 196 kilometers of stormwater line renewal work and new manufacturing have been carried out throughout the city. Currently, the production of 11 kilometers of rainwater separation lines at 110 points continues with an investment of 378 million TL. The rainwater separation projects that have been carried out prevent floods and are also of great importance in cleaning the gulf. In addition to these projects, the gulf dredging project is currently ongoing. In three years, approximately 2500 km of stream cleaning works were carried out throughout İzmir.

Environmentally friendly rail systems
89 percent of the Fahrettin Altay-Narlıdere Metro Line construction has been completed. Station construction work continues. The line is planned to be put into operation in 2023. The location of Üçyol-Buca Line was delivered on January 21, 2022. The works have begun. The line is planned to be completed and put into operation in 4 years. 70 percent of Çiğli Tram Line has been completed. The line is planned to be put into operation at the beginning of 2023. Project and tender preparations continue for the construction of 3 separate lines.

The share of bicycle transportation is increasing day by day
In line with the Izmir Main Transportation Plan, which foresees a significant increase in bicycle and pedestrian transportation routes, İzmir is advancing with firm steps towards the 2030 percent target determined in the 1,5 Transportation Master Plan and Bicycle Master Plan, while the share of bicycle transportation in Izmir is 0,5 percent. rose to 0,8 percent.

The energy of electric buses comes from the sun
Thanks to the Solar Energy Power Plant (GES), which was implemented on a roof area of ​​10 thousand square meters in ESHOT Gediz Garage and Atelier facilities, approximately 5 million TL savings have been achieved so far. Karşıyaka Flamingo Nature Park in Mavişehir Fishermen's Shelter is being brought to the city as one of the important examples of living parks. In addition, it is possible to tour the shores of the Gediz Delta by boat and bus, so that people of İzmir can observe dozens of bird species, especially flamingos. Work continues in the living parks of Olivelo, Kaklıç, Kovankayası and Fırat Nursery.

In the last 3 years, 1 million 963 thousand 621 square meters of new green space has been added to the city. More than 127 million 189 thousand plants, 21 thousand 700 of which were saplings, met the soil.

five green corridors
Five different routes were determined to connect all the park areas of İzmir with each other and the natural areas of the city through green corridors. In this context, the Northern Route (Bostanlı-Yamanlar Valley), Southern Route (Kültürpark-Meles-Kaynaklar Village), Eastern Route (Yeşilova-Smyrna), Northwest Route (Bostanlı-Gediz Delta) and Southwestern Route (İnciraltı Urban Forest-Yelki Olivelo) were determined. . Work has been accelerated for the Flamingo Nature Park project, located at the beginning of the Gediz Delta. One of the important implementations of the “Urban Green Up-Nature Based Solutions” project, which was prepared within the scope of the European Union's “HORIZON 2020” program and received a grant of 2,3 million Euros, was completed in Cheesecioğlu Creek. An “uninterrupted ecological corridor” has been created on the coastal part of the creek and on the route of Halk Park and the following. The metropolitan has spent 7.7 million liras for the arrangement. An official candidacy application has been made for the Gediz Delta of Izmir, one of the largest wetland ecosystems in the Mediterranean Basin, to be included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List.

In order to reveal the richness of nature in İzmir, the "İzmir Nature Atlas" study has started to determine the plants, birds, mammals and inland water fish.

Ecological research continues on increasing the fire resistance of forests and restoring fire-affected forest areas.

Pako Stray Animals Social Life Campus opened
“PAKO Stray Animals Social Life Campus” with a capacity of 1500 animals was opened in Bornova Gökdere. In the 37 thousand square meter facility, there are training and workshop halls, an amphitheater, an operating room, and social areas where dear friends can spend time with the citizens who come to visit. A special shelter was also built in the facility for weakened pack animals. While rehabilitating stray animals, the facility also contributes greatly to the protection of the environment and public health.
