Diyarbakır Zerzevan Sky Observation Event has started. The event, which was held for the second time this year and was held with the slogan "Looking at the Sky", will continue for 4 days. For the organization held in Zerzevan Castle in the Çınar district of Diyarbakır, the participants, selected by lot, settled in their tents located around the castle. A large number of foreign press members and ambassadors of countries such as Iran, Burundi, Indonesia, Chad, Philippines, Thailand and South Sudan will attend the event, which will be open to the public on 11-12 June. During the event, which will be officially opened by the Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank and Minister of Youth and Sports Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoğlu, sky enthusiasts will be filled with history, science, nature and stars with interesting activities.

FROM THE BEST OBSERVATION POINTS

Zerzevan Castle, which has a history of 3 thousand years, is shown among the 10 places where the best sky observations are made in Turkey. The castle, which was included in the World Heritage Tentative List by UNESCO in 2020, and the Mithras Temple, which is located in the castle, has been attracting people's attention for hundreds of years.

Under the auspices of the ministries

The event is being held under the auspices of the ministries of Industry and Technology, Youth and Sports, Culture and Tourism, and under the coordination of TÜBİTAK with the support and contributions of Diyarbakır Governorship and Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality, Karacadağ Development Agency and Turkey Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA). Diyarbakır Governor Ali İhsan Su, President of the Presidency's Digital Transformation Office Ali Taha Koç, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Nadir Alparslan, and TÜBİTAK President Hasan Mandal will attend the event with the youth and their families.

6 thousand 600 APPLICATIONS

About 6 people applied online to join the organization. 600 thousand 2 of them were students. It was noteworthy that 600 percent of the applicants were women. Applications were evaluated as a result of drawing lots. Over a thousand sky enthusiasts, half of them from Diyarbakır, attend the event, where the youngest participant is 56 and the oldest participant is 1 years old.

WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES STARTED

The opening day started with workshop activities. Turkish Space Agency President Serdar Hüseyin Yıldırım, after explaining the National Space Program and the activities carried out within the scope of the program, Zerzevan Castle Excavation Director Assoc. Dr. Aytaç Coşkun will share with the participants the work carried out on the Zerzevan Excavations every evening for three days. Diyarbakir State Classical Turkish Music and Civilizations Choir will perform a concert in front of the castle for two days.

EXPLANATIONS, SATELLITE TECHNOLOGIES

During the event, scientists; Interesting presentations on different topics such as exoplanets, satellite technologies, stars in mirrors, light pollution, let's get to know the sky, misconceptions about basic astronomy, what is in the sky, asteroids passing close to the ground, star occultations, space weather, pulsars and black holes, polar studies. will make.

MEETING WITH THE STARS

Throughout the program, professional and amateur astronomers will study the sky and meet the stars. Participants will also learn about the astronomy work that took place at the Mithras Temple thousands of years ago. During the event, which aims to increase the interest of young people in space with the vision of the National Space Program, seminars, competitions and many activities related to astronomy will be held.

THE LINE IS VAN

The Ministry of Industry and Technology decided to spread the National Sky Observation Festival, which was first started by Bilim ve Teknik magazine in 1998 and held in Antalya Saklıkent, to different cities of Anatolia. The program, which was held in Diyarbakır last year under the name of Zerzevan Sky Observation Event, will be held this year in Van on July 3-4, Erzurum on July 22-24, and Antalya on August 18-21, following Diyarbakır.
