The 'Say Species' event was held on the occasion of the 'World Biological Diversity Day' in cooperation with the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Environmental Protection and Control Department and the Nature Conservation Center Foundation. For the determination of biodiversity, which is also described as a "citizen science" study, 25 local and foreign nature friends, including academicians, made observations in the Karaköy Recreation Area and recorded 63 bird species.
Ankara Metropolitan Municipality continues to protect the history, culture, nature and endemic species of the Capital.
The Environmental Protection and Control Department, which aims to raise awareness to protect the biodiversity and endemic species unique to the capital, organized a 'Say Species' event in Karaköy Recreation Area in cooperation with the Nature Conservation Center Foundation (DKM) on the occasion of the "World Biological Diversity Day". .
240 BIRD SPECIES REGISTERED IN 63 THOUSAND SQUARE METERS OF AREA
25 eco-friendly, including academicians, participated in the biodiversity detection study; He observed and recorded species such as birds, plants, mushrooms, insects and butterflies living in the Karaköy Recreation Area.
The data obtained at the end of the research, which aimed to detect endemic species in the capital city, were shared with the public after expert examination. While 240 bird species were detected in 226 observations made in an area of 63 thousand square meters, experts drew attention to the abundance of bird and butterfly diversity in the Karaköy Recreation Area. Among the birds living in the area, species such as bittern, griffon vulture, jay, starling, blackbird, tit, woodpecker, goldfinch and stork were photographed and recorded.
Stating that they chose the Karaköy Recreation Area, which is surrounded by centuries-old pine trees, because it preserves its naturalness, Landscape Architect of the Department of Environmental Protection and Control, Gül Akkaya, shared the following information:
“We are holding the 'Say Species' event on World Biodiversity Day. For this, we chose the Karaköy Recreation Area because for us, this is an undiscovered paradise in Ankara. We know most of the species diversity here, but some we don't. We wanted to both create an infrastructure for ourselves in terms of biodiversity and organize an event with the public. The inventories will be a good base for both our Metropolitan Municipality and the Nature Conservation Center. In this way, we will learn about the plant species, animal diversity and all the existing species in Karaköy.”
Stating that they observed the presence of some plant species, butterflies and water birds in the Karaköy Recreation Area, where they came for the fourth 'Say the Species' event, they discovered that it is an important place in terms of biodiversity, Chairman of the Board of the Nature Conservation Center Foundation, Dr. Uğur Zeydanlı made the following evaluations:
“Our participants will record the species they see in the field. We call this a 'citizen science' study. Our main purpose here is to record the species we see while spending time in nature. While doing this, it is necessary to examine and observe in order to distinguish the species from each other. This actually offers us an important opportunity to get into nature and get to know it. When we collect the recorded information, it turns to work that will provide a very important scientific base.”
