Turkish and Foreign Language Education Will Be Reshaped

Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer said, “From the next academic year, we will focus on language education, strengthen it with different mechanisms and teaching materials, and at the same time reshape the assessment and evaluation system, to a better point.” said.

In his statement on Turkish and language education, Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer stated that there are three subjects that OECD countries focus on in student achievement studies, namely mathematics, science and language literacy.

Expressing that science literacy in Turkey has reached a very good level and that they are trying to strengthen mathematical literacy, Özer said that he will be in Istanbul for three days on May 16-18 to bring together different methods and good practices that will make learning mother tongue and foreign languages easier and permanent. He stated that they will organize the "Good Practices in Language Education: Action Research Conference" that will continue.

Minister Özer gave the following information about the studies on Turkish and foreign language education, which is the focus of the conference: “At the conference organized by the Board of Education and Discipline, the branch teachers should both learn Turkish as a foreign language and learn other languages, make it permanent, and provide other skills rather than just literacy skills in the language. Good examples that will provide expansions in relation to the branches of science will be presented. According to the results of the conference, I hope we will continue on our way with different findings and new initiatives in order to improve our language literacy processes.”

On the question about measuring 4 language proficiency in Turkish and preparing for the exam, Özer said:

“We have an education system in our country that only measures reading comprehension, that is, actively uses mechanisms to measure a single language skill. In fact, as we know from English, international assessment systems have a structure that measures 4 language skills, namely reading comprehension, writing, speaking and listening skills, and improves language skills accordingly. As the Ministry of National Education, we have developed a mechanism that measures these 4 language skills. Pilot applications have been completed. We took a break due to the Kovid-19 process. Now its final form will hopefully be finished. With the results of both the language conference to be held by the Board of Education and Discipline in Istanbul and the pilot studies measuring 4 language skills, I hope that we will focus on language education from the next academic year, strengthen it with different mechanisms and teaching materials, and reshape the assessment and evaluation system at the same time. We will move it to a good point.”
