The accident occurred at around 18.00 PM local time when a freight train derailed and collided with a passenger train at the station in Sant Boi de Llobregat, about 14 km (8,7 miles) from Barcelona. While the driver of the suburban train died in the accident, a total of 2 people were injured, 85 of them seriously. After the accident, about 100 passengers in the suburban train were evacuated.
Catalan Regional Vice President Jordi Puignero, who visited the region after the accident, said that an investigation would be launched immediately into the cause of the accident.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his condolences to the family of the driver who died in the accident, in a statement on his social media account.
