A Journey through the Ages with 3500 Years of Hittite Cuneiform

The Archeology Club, operating under Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, took history enthusiasts on a journey to pre-epochal times with the 'Hittite Cuneiform' workshop. The participants, who wrote their names on clay tablets using the 3500-year-old Hittite cuneiform, spent a pleasant day in touch with nature at Arkeopark.

Continuing its efforts to make Bursa a more livable city, Bursa Metropolitan Municipality continues its social and cultural activities without slowing down. The Archeology Club, which was established within the scope of the Metropolitan Municipality Culture Branch Directorate to raise awareness of archeology and to carry out applied field studies, organizes various workshops in the 8500-year-old Archeopark. In this context, 'Hittite Nail Workshop', which was prepared with the participation of Hititologist Sezer Seçer Fidan, was held with the intense participation of history buffs. In the study, in which a total of 50 people participated in two groups, a presentation was made about the Hittite history and the history of cuneiform writing. Later, the participants learned the Hittite cuneiform script, which has a history of 3500 years, in practice. In the workshop where Sezer Seçer Fidan gave information about cuneiform signs, history buffs wrote their own names on clay tablets using Hittite letters. Bursa residents, who had a pleasant and informative day, thanked the Metropolitan Municipality and Fidan, who organized the event.

Hittitologist Sezer Seçer Fidan said that they gave information about the Hittites and cuneiform writing with the study organized by Bursa Metropolitan Municipality. Stating that they told the participants about the rich culture of Anatolia and the Hittites, Fidan said, “We have practically explained and demonstrated how ancient people wrote to today's people. It was a good turnout. The Hittites used cuneiform and Hittite hieroglyphs. The cuneiform writings are deciphered in 1907 with the sentence 'You will eat the bread and drink the water'. Since it is a syllable, it is necessary to learn a lot of signs. Cuneiform was used by the inhabitants of the palace and aristocrats at that time. People generally prefer hieroglyphics. It is difficult to learn cuneiform, but we are glad that there is interest. Workshops also play an important role in this context.”

Metropolitan Municipality Archaeologist Volkan Karaca stated that they organized various workshops in order to understand archeology correctly. Karaca stated that they are trying to explain the tools and equipment used by people in the pre-age period and the houses they built, using only the conditions of that period to today's people, "We almost never use technology. The things that people made at that time, today's people make their own experiences. History buffs saw the Hittite cuneiform in practice. In addition, we will organize the 'Bursa Archeology Days' program on the third Wednesday of every month. Together with Turkey's leading archaeologists, we are trying to explain archeology better. We invite all our people to the 'Bursa Archeology Days' program, which will be held on Wednesday, May 18 at 17.30 at the Tayyare Cultural Center with the participation of Mehmet Özdoğan and Harun Taşkıran.
