Dr. Numan Duman said, “After surgical or non-surgical treatment, the muscles in the back of the calf are strengthened with physical therapy. Afterwards, it is possible to return to sports in the sixth and seventh months.” said.

Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital Orthopedic Specialist Dr. Numan Duman made an assessment regarding Achilles tendon injuries.

Achilles tendon, strongest tendon

Dr. Numan Duman said, “It is the tendon that finds the Achilles tendon behind the ankle and forms when the muscles behind the calf join together and attach to the heel bone. It is the strongest tendon in the body. Its function is to bend the ankle towards the sole of the foot with the contraction of the calf muscles.

Most commonly injured tendon: Achilles tendon

Referring to Achilles tendon injuries, Dr. Numan Duman, “Achilles tendon is the most frequently injured tendon around the ankle. It can be injured by direct contact with a cutting tool, or it can be torn after sudden tension in the ankle during amateur sports.

No finger tipping motion can be made

Stating that the patient felt a burning pain behind the ankle after the Achilles tendon injury, Dr. Numan Duman said, “This pain may be accompanied by a tearing sound or a low-level popping sound. In the follow-up, the patient cannot bring the ankle to plantar flexion, that is, he cannot raise the toe or press the gas. warned.

Dr. Numan Duman stated that the diagnosis of Achilles tendon rupture can be made by examination by an orthopedic specialist and noted that the diagnosis is confirmed by MRI or USG.

It can be treated with surgery or plaster.

Referring to the treatment methods of Achilles tendon rupture, Dr. Numan Duman, “Achilles tendon rupture can be performed in the form of end-to-end tendon repair with surgery in young active and athletes. The operated patients return to exercise and sportive activities earlier. Since the tendon is stitched end to end, no shortness occurs, no loss of strength in the ankle. If the patient does not accept surgical treatment or cannot be operated due to comorbidities, a cast is applied in the ankle plantar flexion position. After the plaster treatment, the patient's follow-up and treatment continues with an angle-adjustable ankle brace. he said.

can heal in 6 months

Noting that physical therapy must be done after Achilles tendon rupture, Dr. Numan Duman said, “After surgical or non-surgical treatment, the muscles in the back of the calf are strengthened with physical therapy. Afterwards, it is possible to return to sports in the sixth and seventh months.” said.

Cast and ankle braces should be used in the treatment.

Emphasizing that patients diagnosed with Achilles tendon injury should at least be treated with a cast or ankle brace, Dr. Numan Duman, “Otherwise, non-functional fibrotic tissue occurs between the ruptured tendon ends. This tissue causes loss of strength and restriction of movement in the ankle. It will not be possible for the person to walk long distances or participate in sports activities. It is known that the surgery of delayed Achilles tendon tears is more difficult and less successful than the surgery to be performed in the early period.” said.
