Cord Blood Promises in Stem Cell Treatments

Cord blood rich in stem cells is a glimmer of hope in the treatment of many cancer diseases from lymphoma to leukemia. Histology and Embryology Specialist Prof. Dr. Utku Ateş said, “Cord blood is an effective and alternative source of stem cells in some blood and lymph cancer types such as leukemia, lymphoma and thalassemia.”

Every year 14 million people in the world and 163 thousand people in our country are diagnosed with cancer. Cancer, which is 90 percent due to environmental and 10 percent to genetic factors, is called a disease that results from the irregular proliferation of cells in an organ or tissue. While early diagnosis saves lives, stem cell applications are promising in treatment, especially in the treatment of cancer types such as leukemia, lymphoma and thalassemia. Cord blood, a rich source of stem cells, is becoming important for these treatments. The moment of birth is our only chance to collect and store the cord blood; It is used in clinical trials or in treatment trials under the title of early access program with the approval of the Ministry of Health. For this, appropriate storage conditions must be established.

Histology and Embryology Specialist Prof. Dr. Utku Ateş said, “Blood-forming stem cells, which have achieved great success in the treatment of blood and lymph cancers, are obtained from circulating blood and cord blood, especially from bone marrow.” Ateş lists the collection and storage conditions of cord blood, which is one of the important stem cell sources, and highlights the importance of cell and tissue donation.

Quality and safety are important

Being able to donate organs, cells and tissues is the most important biological gift that a person can give to humanity. If these tissues and cells are needed, those that are processed and stored under appropriate conditions can be used. For this reason, it is of great importance to have a cell tissue bank in Turkey that can provide safe processing and storage services in compliance with current quality and safety rules.

Mesenchymal stem cells obtained from cord tissue…

While hematopoietic stem cells obtained from cord blood are used in the treatment of some blood diseases such as lymphoma, thalassemia (Mediterranean anemia), leukemia; Mesenchymal stem cells obtained from cord tissue can be an alternative in clinical studies for treatment in almost every branch of medicine such as orthopedics, rheumatology, ophthalmology and immunology.
