Stating that healthy adults who do regular sports can exercise during the month of Ramadan, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Assoc. Dr. Nihal Özaras states that elderly individuals, those who have chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, and those who take medication should consult their doctor for exercise. Özaras advises fasting people to pay attention to adequate fluid and nutrient intake after exercise, and to those who do not have regular sports habits to exercise 2 hours after iftar.
Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Assoc. Dr. Nihal Özaras shared his views and recommendations on the subject of exercise, which is one of the most curious during Ramadan.
Medication users should consult a doctor for exercise.
Stating that there are many studies examining the performance of fasting professional athletes in detail, Assoc. Dr. Nihal Özaras, “Although the results of the research sometimes give contradictory results, it was reported that there was no serious effect on the muscle strength and aerobic capacity of the athletes in a review published in 2020. Elderly individuals, those who have chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and those who take medication and pregnant women should definitely ask their doctor to exercise. Healthy adults, on the other hand, can exercise during Ramadan.” said.
Regular exercise habits are important criteria
Stating that people who do sports regularly do not need to change their exercise program, Assoc. Dr. Nihal Özaras said, “Still, the activity level can be reduced by considering the situation during and after the exercise. If you do not have the habit of doing regular sports, walking and exercises at a light pace will be more appropriate.” he said.
Fasting should take fluids and nutrients after exercise
Assoc. Dr. Nihal Özaras said that there is no research data that definitively reveals what time it is more appropriate to do sports during Ramadan, and concluded his words as follows:
“It is known that doing sports while hungry increases fat burning and facilitates weight loss in healthy individuals. However, the inability to take fluids and nutrients after exercise while fasting is a disadvantage in exercising during the day. Exercising about 2 hours after iftar is more suitable, especially for individuals who do not have the habit of doing sports. In order to replace the fluid lost during exercise, it is necessary to pay attention to drinking plenty of water afterwards.
