Kadıköy Municipality has managed to save 740 tons of water so far with its rain water harvesting project. Like this Kadıköy50 percent of the water used in the cleaning of streets and streets in Turkey was obtained from rain. With the pilot application in municipal units, siphon water and rain water were used for garden irrigation.

Reuse of rainwater and gray water to combat drought and thirst Kadıköy The proposal submitted to the Municipal Assembly by the Municipality's Plan and Project Directorate was unanimously accepted on February 5, 2021. Kadıköy The plan grade of the Municipality was approved by the IMM Assembly in February 2022. Kadıköy The municipality is waiting for the completion of the legal procedure to be implemented.

by editing KadıköyRainwater will be collected in the collection tanks of all new buildings to be constructed on parcels of 400 square meters and above in Istanbul. In addition, the use of collected rain water for garden irrigation, siphons and similar works will also be made mandatory.

All Kadıköyprepared to save water in Kadıköy Municipality started the project with a pilot application two years ago. The first rainwater harvesting system was installed in the Ecological Life Park in December 2020 by the municipality. The rain water obtained from here was used for the garden irrigation of the center. Then, with the system installed in Kozyatağı Girls' Dormitory in March 2021, siphon water was met from the rain water. Finally, with the system installed in the Kayışdağı Service Building in August 2021, street cleaning with rain water and washing of construction machines are carried out. With the established system Kadıköy The municipality has saved 740 tons of water annually, or in other words, more than 38 thousand carboys.

“Our aim is to use water sparingly”

Emphasizing the importance of conscious water use Kadıköy Municipality Plan and Project Manager Zerrin Karamukluoğlu gave information about the rain water collection project they started. Karamukluoğlu said, “We have prepared a plan note in order to use rain water better and to evaluate this natural resource. In this plan note we have prepared, we have developed a provision for the collection and storage of rain water and its use in buildings to be constructed on parcels of 400 square meters and above.”

The obligation of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change for the storage of rain water in parcels of 2000 square meters and above. Kadıköy Karamukluoğlu pointed out that it is not usable for water use and said, “The Ministry of Environment and Urbanization had a provision regarding the storage of rain water in parcels of 2000 square meters and above, but we determined it as 400 square meters. because KadıköyThe parcels in are small. Since there are not many parcels over 2000 square meters, we thought that we would not be able to gain enough benefit in collecting rainwater. For this reason, we conducted a more detailed study on the need for storage in parcels of 400 square meters and above, starting from 2000 square meters.”

of their purpose Kadıköy Zerrin Karamukluoğlu said that water is used sparingly in all buildings within the borders of the municipality and continued as follows:

“When our proposal for this plan note goes into effect, Kadıköy Rainwater will be stored in new buildings to be built within its borders. The use of water will be healthier and more beneficial for the environment in terms of climate. In addition, although this plan note has been brought for new buildings, they can be used in existing buildings if the system of their buildings is suitable. There is no obstacle in front of this and we recommend it for more beneficial use of rain water.”

Ecological Life Park: From rain water to garden irrigation

Kadıköy Municipality started its first application with the rain water harvesting system established in Kemal Sunal Park and Ecological Life Center in December 2020. The irrigation water needs of the vegetables and fruits grown in the garden of the center are met. 20 tons of the water used was obtained from rain water.

From the roof of Abdullah Öğücü Girls' Dormitory to the siphon water

The second study was the rainwater harvesting system installed in Abdullah Öğücü Girls' Dormitory in Kozyatağı, collecting the rain water from the roof into these tanks and giving it back to the reservoirs in the rooms. Thus, by using 200 tons of rain water, drinking quality water was prevented from going to the sewer.

Kayisdağı service unit: Clean streets, clean vehicles

The third study is Kadıköy Municipality Kayisdagi Service Unit. With the rain water harvesting system installed in the unit, 520 tons of rain water was harvested, thus preventing the waste of potable quality water.

8 street washing vehicles belonging to the service unit meet the water used to wash the streets and streets from the 100-ton rainwater tank installed. Thus, approximately 50 percent of the streets and streets are cleaned with rain water.

“Each flushing means 8 liters of drinkable water is wasted”

Kadıköy In a statement about the project, Şule Sümer, Director of Environmental Management and Climate Change of the Municipality, drew attention to the water savings and said, "Each flushing means approximately 8 liters of potable quality water going to the sewerage."

Saying, “We are not a water-rich country,” Sümer said, “Almost every year, we have to check and monitor how much water is left in our dams. It snowed this year and our dams are full, but unfortunately this has no effect on the amount of water two years later. Because we are talking about a city of 16 million people and the water consumption of this city. We all need to ensure our own water management and water cycle. Within the scope of our Climate Adaptation Action Plan studies, we took a parliamentary decision on the recovery of rain water in buildings. Just as we try to protect good quality water from tap water by recycling and reusing rain water in our institution, people in their apartments, like the private sector, shopping malls, commercial office buildings and public institutions, have to drain the rain water when necessary.

Drawing attention to the water consumption of commercial areas, Şule Sümer used the following statements:

“A lot of water is consumed in commercial areas, especially in toilets. All of the water here can actually be met from rain water. Existing shopping malls can do this on their own voluntary basis, but it will be mandatory to install rain water system and gray water over 2000 square meters in all shopping malls to be built from now on. We have many residential and commercial areas over 2000 square meters and 400 square meters. This will not be a necessity for existing buildings, but when serious water deprivations begin to occur in the near future, we foresee that it will be done by them willingly.”

What is rainwater harvesting?

Rainwater harvesting; It is defined as the reuse of rain water collected from the roof gutters of the building, garden and concrete surfaces in our daily activities by accumulating in the rain water tank. It has an important function to protect the environment and our natural resources and is also very profitable in economic terms. Since the water collected by rainwater systems from various areas such as roof, garden or concrete floor with rainwater harvesting passes through areas with various pollution potential and reaches the rainwater tank, it should be considered as general use water, not drinking water. The accumulated rain water is used as general utility water in garden irrigation, siphon systems of toilet bowls, and fire water tanks.
