All-Electric Lexus RZ 450e Introduced at its World Premiere

Premium automaker Lexus introduced the all-new electric SUV model, the RZ 450e, with its world premiere. The RZ 450e, Lexus' first vehicle designed from the ground up to be electric; With its design, performance, technology and driving pleasure, it will set new standards in the electric premium world.

The RZ model enriches this experience by preserving the indispensable features of the brand in terms of performance and quality. The brand's unique driving experience is blended with the features of electric vehicles.

Lexus' new design language

Lexus has created a model that looks different from conventional vehicles by using the design freedom brought by fully electric vehicles in the new RZ model. Described as the “new part” of Lexus design, this design shows itself with a unique look arising from the dynamic performance of the vehicle.

The front design of the vehicle has been done in a way that immediately emphasizes that the RZ is a fully electric vehicle. With the absence of an internal combustion engine, the hood was positioned lower and less air intake was included. The "spindle grille", which is a characteristic feature of Lexus models, has evolved with the RZ model and applied to the entire body of the vehicle in three dimensions. The newly designed headlights were also combined with the grille of the electric vehicle. The ultra-thin daytime running lights are designed to put more emphasis on the Lexus L-pattern.

The side profile of the vehicle also draws attention with its flowing lines. While the sharp design at the front emphasizes the power of the vehicle, the SUV style of the RZ, which offers a comfortable space and has strong driving capacity, is emphasized towards the rear.

In addition to this design, the long wheelbase of 2,850 mm also emphasizes the low center of gravity and balance of weight. However, with a length of 4,805 mm, the RZ was 1,898 mm wide and 1,635 mm high.

The all-electric character of the RZ is supported by a high-tech look at the rear as well. The split rear spoiler refers to the vehicle's wide stance, while also contributing to the balanced performance of the RZ. The lane lighting extending across the width of the vehicle also draws attention as a distinctive feature of the new Lexus design.

Electric 'Lexus Driving Signature' on the RZ

Lexus has not compromised on an exciting and intuitive driving experience in its all-electric model, either. Developing the RZ focused on the three key components of the Lexus Driving Signature: comfort, control and handling. In addition to all these, the advantages of fast response and high sensitivity provided by electric vehicles were used to the fullest.

While giving importance to a natural driving feeling in ride quality, RZ's new platform also made important contributions such as less weight, optimum weight distribution and rigidity. the RZ's battery pack; It was integrated into the chassis, under the cabin, lowering the vehicle's center of gravity, resulting in better chassis stability and handling.

The RZ is equipped with the Lexus e-axle used for the first time on the UX 300e. This compact package containing a motor, gear and ECU; placed between the driven wheels. In the RZ, the e-axle is positioned front and rear under the DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system. Thus, the traction and power distribution of the vehicle can be optimally adjusted according to the driving conditions.

The e-axle works silently, efficiently and transmits power with precision. The RZ's electric motors produce a combined 150 kW (80 HP), with 230 kW at the front and 313 kW at the rear. The engines with superior power density also contribute to the layout of the vehicle, while being compact, helping to obtain more living space inside.

The new DIRECT4 system, powered by two e-axles, was also used for the first time on the RZ. DIRECT4, a Lexus exclusive technology, automatically distributes the power between the four wheels without interruption. As a result, the driver achieves a precise and intuitive ride as well as balanced handling without stress. The DIRECT4 system works faster than any mechanical system, changing the front-to-rear torque balance from zero to 100 or from 100 to zero in milliseconds.

More efficiency, range and durability in Lexus' electric

The RZ is equipped with a 71.4-cell lithium-ion battery with an output of 96 kW. Positioned under the cabin as a part of the platform, the battery also lowers the vehicle's center of gravity. Durability was one of the key points when Lexus developed the battery. Thanks to Lexus' extensive experience in battery management technologies, the RZ is expected to retain more than 10 percent of its capacity even after 90 years of use.

Lexus will share more detailed information about the RZ's driving range and battery charge times in the coming periods. However, the RZ is expected to travel more than 400 kilometers on a single charge, according to mixed WLTP consumption standards. Focusing on key factors such as optimized vehicle weight, battery power and performance, the RZ is targeted to consume less than 100 kW per 18 kilometers, making the RZ one of the most efficient all-electrics ever to hit the market.

A world first: the new “butterfly-shaped” electronic steering wheel

The electronic steering system called One Motion Grip stands out as one of the most remarkable new technologies of Lexus RZ. One Motion Grip, with its yoke-style steering wheel design and electronic linkage system, is on Lexus for the first time in the world. With no mechanical linkage and no steering column, much more sensitive and fast responses are obtained. While there is less steering vibration on rough roads, the steering feel gives more confidence on winding roads.

The optional One Motion Grip system comes with a new yoke style steering wheel that replaces the traditional steering wheel. In this way, the driver can steer with less effort. It is possible to turn the new steering wheel only 150 degrees when it is in the straight position and bring it to the right or left steering wheel lock, so that there is no need to overlap each other when turning, unlike traditional systems.

The “butterfly” design of the new steering wheel was made according to the directions given by Lexus' Takumi Masters, who contributed to the perfection of every detail of the RZ. This design also provides a better viewing angle for the instruments and the road.

With the RZ, the Tazuna cockpit concept evolved

The RZ's cabin is an evolution of the Tazuna concept. Thus, the driving position, instruments, controls and multimedia system were precisely placed. Tazuna cockpit, named after a Japanese word meaning that the rider controls the horse's reins with small movements, provides an intuitive communication between the driver and the vehicle. The center console also reinforces the elegant simplicity of the cabin with new dial-type controls.

In the RZ, the indicators, the windshield mirrored display and the 14-inch multimedia screen are positioned to increase the driver's viewing angle. Equipped with a completely new multimedia platform, the system works faster and more intuitively in the RZ. The voice command feature, on the other hand, has been developed to respond to many dialogs. Also included are the new “Hey Lexus” in-car assistant, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integrations.

Unique Omotenashi details on the Lexus RZ

Advanced technologies in the Lexus RZ's cabin include features inspired by the Omotenashi hospitality philosophy. The dimmable panoramic roof increases the feeling of light inside, while preventing heat dissipation, increasing energy efficiency. Thus, it prevents the interior of the vehicle from overheating on sunny days and ensures that the heat does not go out in cold weather. In addition, with a single touch, the ceiling can become opaque from a transparent appearance, preventing direct sunlight from entering the interior. By not using a conventional sunshade, weight is saved and at the same time, it contributes to the more efficient operation of the air conditioner. This helps increase the range of the RZ.

Another technology that underlines the Omotenashi hospitality philosophy at the RZ is the radiant heaters at the front, located at knee level for the driver and passenger. In addition to the heated seats and heated steering wheel, it wraps the legs like a warm blanket, contributing to the cabin warming up more quickly. In addition, it increases the driving range by reducing the load on the air conditioner with energy savings such as the panoramic roof.

High Lexus safety standard in the electric RZ too

Lexus' all-electric model RZ is also equipped with the updated third-generation Lexus Safety System+ with additional features. Taking advantage of advanced active safety systems and driver assistance systems, the RZ also has the new steering-assisted Proactive Driving Assistant feature and driver fatigue / distraction monitoring system. Proactive Driving Assistant uses the front camera to determine the angle of the bend, allowing the steering to be adjusted accordingly when approaching and turning the bend.

In addition, the RZ is also equipped with the e-latch electronic door opening system, which was featured in the NX model for the first time. Working in conjunction with the vehicle's Blind Spot Monitor, the door detects vehicles or bicycles from behind with the Safe Exit Assist system. It is estimated that the system, which was developed as a first in the world, will prevent 95 percent of the accidents that occur when the door is opened. The RZ is also equipped with a digital interior rear view mirror that improves all-weather visibility.
