WHAT IS THE HUMANITARIAN RIGHT TO USE WATER?

The Human Right to Water, which includes the free use of 2.5 cubic meters of 0.5 cubic meters of water as a human right, was accepted by the UN Human Rights Council in 2010. With the decision taken by the IMM Assembly, it started to be implemented as of May 2019. The Court of Accounts found İSKİ's free “Humanitarian Right to Water” application to be against the legislation and the application was abolished on 4 December 2021. The Presidency issued a decree on the subject on December 16, 2021 and approved that municipalities can implement the human right to use water, provided that they take a decision from the authorized decision bodies. Istanbul will continue on its way as the first and only municipality in Turkey to implement the human right to use water.
