İzmir was selected for the Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission initiated by the European Union to create cities that are resistant to the threats posed by climate change.
After the long evaluation process of the European Union, İzmir was entitled to take part in the mission, to which 24 cities from Turkey and 377 cities from Europe applied. In addition to Izmir, Istanbul was chosen from Turkey for the mission, which will include 100 cities.
President Tunç Soyer Expressing his pride in being elected to the mission, he said, “We received another good news today after the 2022 European Award given to our Izmir by the European Parliament two days ago. As İzmir, we have been selected for an important mission of the European Union. This election is an indication that İzmir is a European city and how well it deserves the 2022 Europe Award. İzmir is a pioneer again, creating value again. Our aim is to build a city, country and world that is compatible with nature, resilient, high in welfare and protecting its biodiversity.”
Izmir will benefit from European Union special grants
Ali Ercan Türkoğlu, Chairman of the Board of Directors of İZENERJİ A.Ş., which will carry out the project on behalf of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, İzmir and its citizens, said, “With this mission, İzmir will benefit from European Union special grants and loans in its works. We will work in coordination with other selected European cities to achieve the goal of being climate neutral. The mayors of the selected cities will come together and prepare a Climate Contract, which shows that they will be carried out together with the decision-making mechanisms of the city. Our company İZENERJİ A.Ş. Under the coordination of our municipality, with the participation of institutions and affiliates of our municipality, Chambers of Commerce and Industry, İzmir Development Agency, City Council, universities, professional chambers, associations, non-governmental organizations, the private sector and all other stakeholders of the city, İzmir will be established in 2030. we are starting our work in line with the goal of making it climate neutral. İzmir will lead with zero carbon target
The Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission, one of the five missions initiated by the European Union to solve the main problems in the world, is a program that supports the achievement of the zero carbon target of 100 cities by 2030, which has important implementation goals and aspirations among cities. In addition to İzmir, all the cities selected for the mission will reduce their carbon emissions to zero by reducing the 2050 climate-neutral cities target to 2030 and lead other cities.
