The pandemic has brought obesity out of control. The prevalence of obesity in Turkey has approached the limit of 40% for women and 25% for men. Stating that obesity is as dangerous as cancer, experts point out that the treatment requires a complicated process that must be carried out under the supervision of endocrinology, nutrition, psychiatry and aesthetic surgery specialists, and that Post-Bariatric Surgery operations put the last point in the treatment of obesity.

The pandemic has increased the tension of obesity in Turkey. According to the report prepared by the Parliamentary Committee on Obesity Fighting Methods and Measures, in 2021, the rate of obesity in women reached the limit of 40% and 25% in men. In the report, it was stated that 34% of the population was overweight, that is, at the obesity limit, and it was determined that the obesity rate was increasing from east to west. Turkey ranks 1st in Europe and 4th in the world with these rates. Stating that obesity brings psychological problems such as depression along with many risky health problems, Etiler Esthetique Center and Private Etiler Hospital Medical Director Prof. Dr. Alper Çelik said, “Increasing stress and anxiety during the pandemic opened the door to eating disorders. Obesity, as the disease of the age, poses as much danger as cancer in Turkey as well as in the rest of the world. According to the data of the World Health Organization, 3 out of every 1 people in Turkey is obese. There is a long treatment for obesity that should be carried out under the supervision of general surgery, endocrinology, nutrition, psychiatry and aesthetic surgery specialists, and even heart and chest diseases specialists should be included if necessary.

Skin is recovered with Post-Bariatric Surgery operations

Noting that obesity treatment is a complex treatment under the control of various specialists, starting with bariatric surgery and extending to the recovery of the body with aesthetic operations, Prof. Dr. Alper Çelik made the following assessment on the subject: “It is of great importance that all stages of treatment are carried out at the right time. This process carries a great risk for those who have diabetes, high blood pressure and anemia. Our priority is always to eliminate these problems and lose excess weight. Excessive weight loss can cause unsightly skin sagging, especially in the face, neck, arms, chest, abdomen, hips and legs areas of the body. We can correct these deformations with “Aesthetics After Obesity Surgery”, that is, Post-Bariatric Surgery, which includes many procedures.”

As the weight lost increases, the deformation also increases.

Mentioning that the increase in the amount of weight lost also increases the body deformations, Etiler Esthetique Center and Private Etiler Hospital Medical Director Prof. Dr. Alper Çelik said, “When the period of getting rid of excess weight is over, we still need a waiting period. Our goal here is primarily to ensure that the patient can stay at his target weight for a certain period of time. After this stage, Post-Bariatric Surgery comes into play. Such operations may involve multiple stages depending on deformations. Although the recovery process takes a little longer than other surgical operations, Post-Bariatric Surgery is one of the most important stages of obesity treatment. We see this last stage of treatment as a necessity, not a choice, so that patients can regain a healthy form and psychology.”
