With the marine inspection and cleaning works carried out by Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Environmental Protection and Control Department at Çamlıbel Fisherman's Shelter, the Mersin sea is protected and the damage caused by environmental wastes to the sea and living things is minimized.

Environmental Protection and Control Department, Maritime Services and Inspection Branch; It carries out a comprehensive activity with 3 marine inspection boats, 1 sea sweeper, 1 fiber boat, as well as personnel collecting garbage from the sea surface in the field. Metropolitan, which closely follows innovative applications, makes the inspections comprehensive by adding a UAV (Drone) to its structure, and plans to expand the cleaning area even more with the garbage catcher system at sea and the barrier system at the riverside.

33 million fines on 57 ships

The Metropolitan Municipality, which increased the frequency of inspections with the drone it acquired in 2020 and completely inspected its area of responsibility, has imposed penal action on 2019 ships since April 33. Determining the ships polluting the Mersin Sea with bilge and oil-like waste, the teams have conducted 50 hours of drone inspection so far. The teams applied a total of 57 million 40 thousand 917 TL of penal action. With the drone, pollution monitoring and evaluation flights are also carried out for stagnant waters such as streams, streams, ponds, beaches and beaches.

800 inspections were carried out by boat, 313 cubic meters of waste was collected

Continuing their routine inspections with 3 marine inspection boats, the teams regularly clean the sea surface with a sea broom and fiber boat at the points where they detect pollution. In addition, some of the teams carry out manual cleaning with the sea cleaning net. Inspection boats have carried out 2019 inspections since April 800. During 2021, the teams collected a total of 270 cubic meters of waste, including bilge, waste oil and solid waste, and 2022 cubic meters of waste in the first 2 months of 43.

“Penalties are too heavy”

Orhan Dedeoğlu, who works as the chief in the Maritime Services and Inspection Branch Directorate, stated that they carry out the cleaning operations with the boats and personnel in the areas within their responsibility areas at sea, and said, “We clean the sea surface both manually and with our vehicles. We have a sea broom. We also have a small fiber boat. We get between the boats and collect the accumulated waste in between. Then we have our bilge system. We also take bilges from boats and ships with it. We have one more team; it also inspects the ships in the open sea, that is, it imposes a sanction against those who pollute the sea surface. If they are contaminated, our inspectors take the sample and send it for analysis. If there is a casualty in the sea, a penal sanction will be applied against him.”

“We are planning to apply the barrier system in pollution originating from streams”

Captain Pelin Teymur, who works in the Department of Maritime Services and Inspection, explained the garbage catcher system they are working on to combat marine pollution and said, “Imagine a small bucket, there is a vacuum system that works with a pump system. The pump pulls the bucket down with its suction power and takes the garbage on the water surface. Then it gives the clean water out by pushing back, the garbage stays in the bucket system. We are currently working on such a system. We will also bring them into our structure," he said.

Teymur, who stated that they continue to work on preventing the pollution originating from the stream, said, “We are planning to apply the barrier system for the pollution originating from the stream. There are barriers made of stable polyethylene structure floating on the sea surface. These barriers are also used in the fight against marine pollution," he said. Teymur stated that these barriers can be installed at the mouths of streams by performing feasibility studies with authorized companies at suitable angles and locations, adding, “These garbage is attached to the barrier system and collected from the surface with the relevant personnel or equipment, especially during periods when the water level on the sea surface is high and the garbage is transported very heavily. In this way, it is prevented from mixing with the sea," he said.

“When the sea is clean, sea creatures and ecosystems work more efficiently”

Noting that the Mersin sea should be kept clean in order to protect the living species and to reduce the population of invasive species, Teymur said, “When the sea is clean, the sea creatures and ecosystem work more efficiently and with correct principles. It means clean sea; It means the sea with plenty of oxygen, where living things can breed comfortably, invasive species decrease and our fish population increases. We are doing our best for this with our work," he said.
