İBB continues its efforts to keep the Sycamore trees alive in Beşiktaş, which has an important place in the historical texture of Istanbul. An effective study has been carried out for the last 2 years to save the plane trees caught in cancer. IMM Department of Parks, Gardens and Green Areas uses scientific methods to combat the disease. In this context, after the sick trees are removed, young plane trees are planted in their place. The same procedure was performed for a total of 112 sick plane trees on different dates.
EARLY DIAGNOSIS CAN SAVE
More sycamore trees could have been saved without cancer if it had been intervened earlier.
The old Sycamore trees, the symbol of Çırağan and Dolmabahçe, were sick. Assoc. Dr. Zeki Severoğlu's report dated 12 September 2011 contained a definitive diagnosis. Sycamore trees were infected with the relentless and contagious cancer disease. The disease was progressing rapidly, and it was necessary to intervene immediately and save the healthy trees. Until 2013, 56 trees with cancer were treated.
5 YEARS LOST PERIOD
Between 2013 and 2018, no action was taken for exactly 5 years. The disease progressed rapidly. Cancer, which is highly contagious because the roots of plane trees are in contact, spread to healthy plane trees as well.
IMM MADE APPLICATION IN 2018
On September 6, 2018, IMM applied to the Provincial Directorate of Environment and Urbanization and the Conservation Commission for the plane trees that have dried out and are at risk of falling over on the Majlis-i Mebusan Street, Dolmabahçe Street and Çırağan Street.
2021 TREE WITH CANCER INTERVENED IN 73
On June 25, 2020, with the decision of the Istanbul Regional Commission for Conservation of Natural Heritage, numbered 04-1068, 73 plane trees with cancer were intervened. The places of these trees were ventilated for 6 months. This process was carried out upon the suggestion of scientists to reduce the risk of transmission of the disease to new plantings and to ensure the continuation of the Sycamore generation; Following this process, the same number of young trees were planted in the same places.
THE FIGHT WITH CANCER CONTINUES
Recently, it was determined that 39 more trees were caught in cancer. The same administrative procedures were carried out for these sick trees. After the permission, the soil of the plane trees was taken to rest for 6 months. The remaining 39 young Sycamore trees will be planted in a healthy way in August. The same procedure was carried out for a total of 112 sick Sycamore trees on different dates, and the area will be brought together with the same number of new Sycamore trees. As alleged, 2022 Sycamore trees were not cut down in the region in March 112. These operations for 73 plane trees were completed between September 2020 and March 2021. Currently only 39 Sycamore trees, which will replace previous Sycamore trees in August as the soil clearance process is expected. Thanks to all these procedures, it is tried to prevent the disease from spreading to the remaining trees. As a species, struggle is being made to ensure the continuity of the Sycamore trees, which give the place its identity and have a historical meaning. Young and healthy trees were planted in place of sick plane trees. After 39 sycamore trees, which are still in the ventilation process, take their place young and healthy, the process will continue to be followed carefully.
