While the reactions to the cutting of plane trees on Çırağan Street in Beşiktaş, Istanbul were increasing gradually; Bursa Metropolitan Municipality carries the centuries-old plane trees, one of the symbols of the ancient Ottoman civilization, to the future with periodic maintenance and restoration works.

While the cutting of plane trees in Istanbul suddenly became one of the important agenda items of the country; President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan criticized the cutting of trees on the pretext of 'disease' by giving an example from Bursa. Erdogan said, “The middle of a 500-year-old tree was carved in Bursa. We treated that tree, it started to grow again. But they are cutting down the green tree," he said. As President Erdoğan stated, "far beyond being a tree", century-old plane trees, which are the symbol of ancient civilization for Bursa, are being carried to the future with the works of the Metropolitan Municipality. Sycamore trees, the good news of the Ottoman's transition from a dream to a world state, are the most important witnesses of Bursa's ancient history. Bursa Metropolitan Municipality regularly takes care of the monumental trees, which are between 100 and 600 years old, which surround the city as an ornament of the city. While the maintenance of 5 monumental plane trees, whose trunks were found to rot within the scope of the works, has been completed, the restoration of two trees in Tophane and Kültürpark is still continuing. Metropolitan teams protect the area that is cleaned of bacteria that cause 'rottening', ensuring that the plane trees live longer.

“We keep the centennial plane trees alive”

Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Alinur Aktaş said that he regretted the cutting of plane trees on Çırağan Street in Beşiktaş, Istanbul. Expressing that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan explained the importance given to monumental trees in Bursa very well in the meeting he held with the deputies, President Aktaş said, “First of all, I have to say this; The plane tree is far beyond being a tree, it is the symbol of our ancient civilization for Bursa. The plane tree, which Osman Gazi, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, saw in his dream, is almost the harbinger of the path from the principality to the world state. For this reason, you can see plane trees between 100 and 600 years old, witnessing our ancient history, in every corner of Bursa. As the ornament of our city, we regularly take care of these monumental trees that surround the city. Only last year, we completed the restoration of 5 monumental plane trees whose trunks were found to be rotten. Restoration works of two trees with estimated ages of 192 and 433 in Tophane and Kültürpark are still ongoing. In addition, within the scope of our program until the end of the year, pruning and routine maintenance of a total of 1200 monumental trees will be carried out. We have shown the importance we attach to trees and nature by increasing our new green area target, which was 1,5 million square meters at the beginning of the term, to 3 million, in order for Bursa to be a city worthy of the 'Green Bursa' identity.
