With NATO's Prague Summit in November 2002, the second enlargement process after the Cold War was entered, and alliance and accession negotiations were held with the Balkan and Baltic countries. Although France is a member of the alliance, it decided to leave the integrated military structure of NATO in 1966 as part of President Charles de Gaulle's pursuit of an independent foreign policy. withdrew from the structure but returned again in 1974.
