Started for the Establishment of the First Green Hydrogen Plant of the Turkish Industry

For the “Green Hydrogen Plant” planned to be established in Bandırma, Balıkesir; South Marmara Development Agency, Enerjisa Üretim, Eti Maden, TÜBİTAK MAM and ASPİLSAN Enerji came together and signed the corporate cooperation protocol at the ceremony.

A start has been made for the production and use of green hydrogen, an alternative energy source that has the greatest potential to replace fossil fuels in reducing carbon emissions with existing technologies to achieve 100% energy conversion, at the Bandırma Energy Base of Enerjisa Üretim.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Dr. Çetin Ali Dönmez also attended the ceremony; Enerjisa Production CEO İhsan Erbil Bayçöl, Eti Maden General Manager Serkan Keleşer, South Marmara Development Agency Secretary General Abdullah Power, TÜBİTAK Vice President / MAM President V. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yozgatlıgil and ASPİLSAN Energy General Manager Ferhat Özsoy were also present.

South Marmara Will Become a Hydrogen Production Center

The ceremony started with the presentation of South Marmara Development Agency Energy Manager Mehmet Volkan Duman. Giving information about hybrid systems in his presentation, Duman touched upon Turkey's energy transformation process and the potential of new energy systems that will be the first for our country. Duman also explained the advantages of the Southern Marmara Region in the field of renewable energy and said that the main goal is to create a "Hydrogen Production Center" on the Bandırma-Biga line.

In his presentation, Duman mentioned that the Southern Marmara Region is the most suitable region for attempts to revive the hydrogen economy. The region's production of 12,50% of Turkey's electricity, hosting Turkey's most efficient renewable energy plants with a renewable source-based electricity installed capacity of 2,50 GW, and wind energy installed capacity are the reasons why South Marmara is preferred as the green hydrogen production center. He underlined that it is effective that Turkey is the leader and that it is determined as one of the most attractive regions in the offshore RES studies carried out jointly by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and the Danish Energy Agency.

Enerjisa Production Process Monitoring and R&D Assistant Manager Kahraman Çoban, ASPİLSAN Enerji İstanbul R&D Manager Dr. Emre Ata, TÜBİTAK MAM Senior Chief Researcher Assoc. Dr. Fehmi Akgün and Head of Eti Maden Technology Development Department Derya Maraşlıoğlu made their presentations at the ceremony; They shared with the participants the hydrogen studies they carried out, their projects in the field of renewable energy, their related investments and general introduction information about their establishments.

“Turkey will be able to create added value if it is a pioneer in this sense and moves forward”

After the presentations, the protocol speeches started. Making his speech, Enerjisa Production CEO İhsan Erbil Bayçöl said that he was happy to host and thanked the participating organizations. Bayçöl stated that Turkey has an important potential regarding hydrogen and that Turkey should be a pioneer in this regard by acting quickly. Bayçöl said that the process after the signing of the protocol is very valuable and stated that Enerjisa Üretim would like to take part in the topics that are tried to be addressed in this protocol with all its strength. Turkey can create added value when it is a pioneer in this sense and takes concrete steps; the faster the road can be taken, the more successful it will be; that these journeys are difficult individually; He concluded his speech by stating that only a point can be reached with the union of forces, and that Enerjisa Üretim wants to take part in this project voluntarily with all its resources and heart.

“The fact that companies in Turkey have an initiative in this direction is the main driving force”

Giving the good news of domestic lithium battery production in May in his speeches, ASPİLSAN Energy General Manager Ferhat Özsoy said, “It is very important for us to be in the protocol. The fact that companies in Turkey have an initiative in this direction is the main driving force. While the developments in the world on hydrogen continue, Turkey needs to speed up its work on this issue. He concluded his speech by saying, "South Marmara Development Agency's leadership in this matter, bringing us together, and mobilizing all the possibilities of our organizations in this regard".

“It is very important that the public and private sectors come together”

TÜBİTAK Vice President / MAM Vice President Prof. Dr. In his speech, Ahmet Yozgatlıgil said, “I am happy that we came together within the scope of this protocol on an issue that is of such importance in our country and in the world. It is very important for the public and private sectors to come together. This year is our 50th Anniversary. We went to sectoral restructuring at TÜBİTAK MAM. One of our new units is “Energy Technologies” and this is its first day. In this configuration, we created a large research group on hydrogen and fuel cell under the Energy Technologies Vice Presidency. Within the scope of this study, we think that we will achieve very important outputs from here.” he said.

“Boron has great advantages in hydrogen”

In his speech; Eti Maden İşletmeleri General Manager Serkan Keleşer stated that they sell pipes processed in 33 facilities under the management of Eti Maden, adding value to the world, and said, “We will complete a chain by putting the boron carbide facility into operation in 2022 with a new added value. A ton of ore is $150, a ton of boric acid is $600-700. We will produce boron carbide powder from boric acid by adding a new added value to boron in our facilities, and we will make armor of 30 thousand dollars with this powder, which is 400 thousand dollars per ton. All the links of this chain will be in this country. Our second project is “ferro boron”. We will lay the foundation in Bandırma this year. Again, with the work of our friends, we will lay the foundation of our production facilities in order to obtain the lithium in the ore. We obtain lithium from liquid waste. Again this year, we will start the investment in the production of "sodium boron hydride", which we attach great importance to. 2022 will be a year when investments in boron-related end products will peak. Boron also has great advantages in hydrogen, and by using this advantage, we will focus on the production of solid boron-hydrogen compounds with high added value. In this regard, Eti Maden will contribute to the development of this cooperation by giving its best support.”

“We are now able to talk about this matter concretely”

South Marmara Development Agency Secretary General Abdullah Power said, “We are extremely pleased to be taking the step of such a protocol in our region. As a development agency, we are aware of the potential of our Region as an institution working under the coordination of our Ministry of Industry and Technology, and we always try to evaluate it by highlighting it. We have also done a lot of work on hydrogen, we have given a lot of thought to it. At this point, we are now able to talk about this business concretely, with the advantages of technology and the significant progress in the R&D studies carried out by our organizations. In this sense, I sincerely thank all parties of the protocol.” he finished his speech.

“We need to use the accumulation in the public sector together with the private sector”

Coming to the stage for the last speech of the program, Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Dr. Çetin Ali Dönmez said, “I would like to thank all our organizations that embraced the project. The most important issue in our Ministry is to establish these cooperations. To create a culture of coming together. Our institutions such as TÜBİTAK MAM carry out very important works. We need to use this accumulation in the public sector together with the private sector. We need to come up with good success stories from here. The perspective of the Ministry is to support concrete and reasonable projects as much as possible, and it is also possible to mobilize the Ministry's resources so that the studies to be carried out in areas where a common vision has been determined by our institutions such as "Bandırma Energy Base" will benefit SMEs, academia and entrepreneurs in Turkey. I wish this partnership to be fruitful once again.” he ended his speech.

The ceremony ended with the signing of the corporate cooperation protocol and a group photo shoot.
