The occupancy rate of Kartalkaya Dam has increased to 50 percent

The occupancy rate of Kartalkaya Dam, which experienced a serious decrease in water level due to the dry summer and intensive agricultural irrigations, increased to 50 percent with the last snowfall in the region. According to the latest data, it is estimated that the occupancy will be 2 percent in 100 months.

According to the data of Gaziantep Water and Sewerage Administration (GASKİ), which is affiliated to Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, the occupancy rate of Kartalkaya Dam, which is one of the sources that supply water to the city, was measured as 82 percent, holding 50 million cubic meters of water with the snowfall in January.

After the last summer months were dry and the occupancy rate of the dam decreased by up to 20 percent due to the intense water supply to agricultural irrigation, the occupancy rate of the dam will be 1 percent in 2 months, with the snowfall effective in the region and Gazi city and the daily inflow of 100 million cubic meters of water. .

Due to the intense snowfall in the high parts of the basin, it is estimated that there will be no water shortage in the summer months.

GASKİ General Manager Hüseyin Sönmezler, who made a statement on the subject, stated that as of today, 80 percent of Düzbağ's water is given to the city-wide of Gaziantep, and Mizmilli's water is given to the higher parts of the city:

“According to meteorological records, 1968 centimeters of snow fell in January 67 in Gaziantep and 1 meter in February of the same year. In the following years, 1972 centimeters of snow was measured in February of 40, 2003 centimeters in February of 47, and 2016 centimeters of snow in January of 15. In January of last year, there was 10 centimeters of snowfall. After a long time, our city received the long-awaited snowfall in January, and after 54 years, 60 centimeters of snowfall took place. It is pleasing that snowfalls come in this period when we talk about global climate change and drought scenarios. We hope that it will turn into benefits both in agricultural irrigation activities and in its use for human consumption.”

In the continuation of his statement, General Manager Sönmezler stated that snowfall also occurred in the Aksu and Göksu Basins, which supply drinking water to the city, and said, “The snow height in the higher parts of Çağlayancerit, which feeds the Aksu basin, was over 1 and a half meters. Again, in the Göksu Basin, where the Düzbağ Drinking Water regulator is fed, 1 and a half meters of snowfall occurred. In February, the amount of precipitation decreased a lot. There hasn't been enough rain yet. We received precipitation well below the February average. The precipitation per square meter has not reached 20 kilograms yet. We hope that our region will receive more precipitation in the coming days, especially in March and April.”
