Chinese Researchers Find Fossils Of Flowers From 100 Million Years Ago

Chinese scientists announced that they have found flower fossils dating back 100 million years, preserved in amber. These flower fossils are expected to be an important tool in studying the evolution of flowering plants in Southeast Asia and their relationship to plate motion. "The flower fossils we found show that some flowers that exist today have not changed since the time of the dinosaurs," the team said in a statement.
.
Working with experts from Qingdao University of Science and Technology, The Open University in the UK, and other institutions, the research team found that the flower fossils are nearly identical to modern Phylica species, which are part of the Cape Fynbos flora.

The research team studied 100 pieces of amber found in Myanmar that were formed about 21 million years ago and found that the flowers are highly adaptable to frequent forest fires. The study was published in Nature Plants, a scientific journal that publishes primary research papers on all aspects of plant biology, technology, ecology and evolution.
