After women were allowed to enter the profession in Saudi Arabia, more than 30 women applied for the post, which was sought for 28 female train drivers.
Renfe, the Spanish state-run rail company that operates a high-speed rail in the Arab kingdom, said thousands of Saudi women applied to use high-speed trains between Islam's holiest cities, Mecca and Medina, just a month after the ad aired.
Applicants are between the ages of 22 and 30. Nearly 14 people passed the first phase of recruitment as Renfe prioritized education levels and English skills.
The company said the drivers will be recruited after a year of paid training, which is scheduled to begin around March 15.
Saudi Arabia allowed women to drive in 2018 and travel abroad without the consent of a male guardian in 2019.
Last year, Saudi media announced that single, divorced or widowed women are allowed to live alone without a man's permission.
