Wrong Agricultural Practices Cause an Increase in Potholes in Central Anatolia

Duru Bulgur Chairman of the Board Emin Duru, who drew attention to the fact that the potholes, the number of which has increased rapidly especially in the Central Anatolian Region, point to a significant danger recently, said, “Considering the arid land structure of the Central Anatolia Region, the correct determination of the crop to be planted is extremely important for the sustainability of agriculture. . The excess water requirement of plants such as corn and beet causes the water supply of wells in arid regions to deplete.

The number of sinkholes is increasing rapidly in the Konya Plain, one of the most important centers of grain production in Turkey. The formation of sinkholes, which was rarely observed in the region in the past years, has reached a record number in recent years due to the unconscious use of groundwater in agricultural production. Excessive irrigation in the cultivation areas in the region causes barren soils, especially in regions where the temperature is high and the number of sunny days is high. Duru Bulgur Chairman of the Board Emin Duru said that they have been trying to raise awareness in the society about wrong agricultural practices for many years. Emin Duru said, “Konya Plain is one of the most important centers of cereals and pulses production in our country. In the past, a sinkhole was formed in this region every 20 years, but now this number has increased to 30 to 40 per year. Considering the arid land structure of the Central Anatolia Region, the correct determination of the crop to be planted is extremely important for the sustainability of agriculture. We, as Duru Bulgur, consider it our duty to draw attention to this issue at every opportunity.”

The planted product should be carefully selected.

Stating that the uncontrolled use of groundwater in agriculture accelerates the formation of sinkholes, Emin Duru said, “Central Anatolia is an arid region and planting water-based plants in this region is an extremely wrong practice. For example, corn, a plant that grows in 120 days and loves water, is cultivated intensively in this region. The excess water requirement of plants such as corn and beet causes the water supply of wells in arid regions to deplete. The construction of dams and dams in front of the streams and streams feeding the plain also causes the underground water level in the plain to recede and the water wells to go down to 400 meters. Due to water withdrawals, sinkholes started to increase rapidly in our region. Considering all these regional conditions, producers should be encouraged to plant pulses for one year and wheat for another year. Wheat, beans in the lands suitable for irrigated agriculture in the region; In barren lands, crops such as chickpeas and lentils should be planted. However, wheat production should be encouraged more in this region as wheat gains more and more strategic importance all over the world.
